The Mahindra Scorpio-N is one of the only few full-size ladder-on-frame SUVs that are offered with a 4X4 system in India. It is currently one of the most popular SUVs sold by the brand in the country, and surprisingly enough, it’s equally popular in Australia as well. Recently, Mahindra Automotive invited a number of Australian journalists to India to test their SUVs at the Mahindra SUV Proving Track in Chennai. A lot of them drove the Mahindra Thar and the Scorpio-N and put both of these SUVs through their paces.
Australian journalist tests Scorpio-N
In this particular video shared on YouTube by CarExpert, the journalist drives the Mahindra Scorpio-N through the extremely challenging off-road course of the MSPT. Before commencing the off-road tests, he mentions that they also have a Mahindra SUV Proving Track in Australia, but it is not as massive as the one in Chennai. He adds that this proving ground has a number of challenging obstacles and courses. These all help the engineers of the brand in developing new products and test their potential.
Axle twist obstacle
Following the introduction, the journalist starts driving the Scorpio-N after engaging the low-range gear. He first starts with the articulation challenge where he drives the Scorpio-N on an angled road. The presenter mentions that the car can get to a decent angle without rolling over. Next up, he performs the stress test of the axles with a new obstacle. Prior to this, he mentions that the Scorpio-N comes with 227mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of 500mm.
During this obstacle, he states that it has been designed to prove the capabilities of articulation of the axles because of the use of a ladder-on-frame chassis. The presenter also emphasizes the safety aspect of the Mahindra Scorpio-N and mentions that it has managed to score a perfect 5-star rating in the global NCAP. This makes the Mahindra Scorpio-N an amazingly safe off-roading vehicle.
Steps obstacle
Next up, he mentions that the SUV offers 400 Nm of torque, which is a decent amount. Along with it, the car also offers decent approach and departure angles at 27.2 degrees and 21.3 degrees, respectively. Following this, he takes on the next obstacles of steps, and the Scorpio-N, according to the presenter, performs flawlessly. He adds that the suspension compliance of the Scorpio-N is very good and it feels planted and does not feel unstable.
Articulation challenge
In the last obstacle, the Scorpio-N takes on the deep ditches. The presenter mentions that if he was not told that this SUV was capable of taking on this obstacle, he would not have done it in a normal scenario. He mentions that the car gets under extreme stress in this test, as at times two of its wheels are off the ground. This obstacle helps in testing out the potential of the rear differential lock and the low-range gear. He states that for anyone who has not done such an obstacle, it feels like the SUV will roll over. However, the Scorpio-N is performing like a champion and is taking on the obstacle extremely easily.
