Tata Harrier will be first car to be tested under Bharat NCAP crash test

There has been considerable buzz and speculation surrounding Bharat NCAP, the new safety standard for cars in India. A few days ago, the Bharat NCAP website went live, showcasing crash test images of two cars available in India – the Kia Sonet and Tata Punch. While these images confirmed that the Sonet and Punch underwent crash tests by Bharat NCAP, a recent report confirms that the Tata Harrier is the first domestically manufactured passenger car to undergo Bharat NCAP crash tests.

According to a recent report, it’s confirmed that the Tata Harrier has already undergone a series of crash tests conducted by Bharat NCAP, a program launched in August 2023. The safety ratings resulting from these tests for the Tata Harrier will be announced in the next 3-4 weeks. Notably, the new Tata Harrier, along with the new Tata Safari, received a commendable five-star rating from Global NCAP at their launch in October 2023.

The updated Tata Harrier arrives with several exterior design tweaks, a revamped cabin layout offering more features, and claims to offer enhanced safety with standard six airbags and ADAS in top-spec variants. However, the Harrier remains mechanically unchanged, continuing to offer the 2.0-litre 170 PS diesel engine with options of 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Apart from Tata Motors, which initiated sending the first car to Bharat NCAP for crash test ratings, other automakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Kia have also begun submitting their models to Bharat NCAP. All carmakers and automotive brands operating in India have extended their support to Bharat NCAP, recognizing that conducting vehicle tests in India rather than sending them abroad for Global NCAP crash tests will be more cost-effective.

Launched in August 2023, Bharat NCAP is a standardized safety program by the Central Government of India aimed at assigning safety ratings to passenger cars sold in the country through crash tests. With Bharat NCAP’s introduction in India, Global NCAP announced the discontinuation of its “Safer Cars for India” initiative, specifying it will no longer conduct crash tests for cars from India. The Central Government has partnered with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) in Pune to conduct Bharat NCAP crash tests on cars sold in India.
