The numbers for 2023 are mostly in and the top 15 electric vehicles in terms of sales provide some interesting insight. Tesla still has a gigantic lead on the rest of the field combined. Beyond that though there are some notable names in the top 15 that deserve recognition.
Tesla is still the world’s leading EV manufacturer beating out even BYD by over 200,000 units in 2023.
According to data compiled by Car&Driver, which used numbers directly from automakers when available and Autonews sales estimates, over 600,000 of Tesla’s 1.8 million total deliveries worldwide were from the Model Y and Model 3 in the USA. Among these two models, the Model Y led the way with approximately 385,900 sales, while the Model 3 followed with 232,700 estimated sales.

Taking home bronze is the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV line with 62,045 sales. That represents a big win for a car that truly struggled throughout 2022. Rivian takes home fourth place with its R1S and R1T. It doesn’t release specific sales numbers for each but in total, Rivian sold approximately 47,200 units.

The best of the rest starts with the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 40,771 units. Then the VW ID.4 managed to take sixth with 37,789 units and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 scored 33,918 sales during the 2023 year. Tesla’s other two models, the Model S and Model X, came in eighth and ninth. Car and Driver estimates that the automaker sold roughly 26,700 of the sedans and 24,700 of the high-end SUVs.

The Ford F-150 Lightning managed to sneak into the top ten with 24,165 sales during 2023. 11th went to the BMW i4 with 22,583 sales and every other model had less than 20,000 sales. The Kia EV6 shifted 18,897 units, the BMW iX came in 13th with 17,301 sales, and the Nissan Ariya beat the Hyundai Ioniq 6 with 13,464 sales compared to the Korean’s 12,999.
The automotive landscape is evolving rapidly, especially in the realm of electric vehicles. It will be interesting to see how various brands adapt and revise their strategies for EVs in 2024 and beyond as they respond to market demands and regulatory changes.
