Several videos of a Volvo C40 EV were going viral on the Internet. Volvo India has now released their official statement about the incident and how they are helping the customer.

Volvo in statment said, “We are aware of an incident on Saturday involving a fire on a C40 while being driven. The embedded safety features informed the driver to take the car aside and step out of the car. There were no injuries & all occupants were safe. Our Customer Care call center was online to guide the customer on requisite safety measures. At Volvo Cars we pride ourselves on the safety of our cars and have taken this incident very seriously. The said vehicle will be minutely examined by our technical experts to ascertain the cause. We are in touch with and continue to support the customer.”
Volvo claims that the travellers in the vehicle got an alert and notification informing the people about the possible fire. The owner has not mentioned that in the video though. A through investigation is ongoing and Volvo is likely to share the results in a few week’s time.
The exact details are not available, but the car caught fire while driving on NH53. The owner, Saurabh Rathore from Raipur, was traveling with three friends when the car suddenly caught fire without any warning. As they noticed smoke, they stopped the car, and everyone got out. Unfortunately, the vehicle soon became engulfed in flames, and locals couldn’t save it; it turned into ashes.
The C40 Recharge is a transformed version of the XC40 Recharge but in a sleeker SUV-coupe style. It’s an all-electric SUV with the same structure and power setup as the XC40 Recharge. Built on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the C40 Recharge in India has dual electric motors (one on each axle) and a 78kWh battery pack. It claims a range of 530km on a single charge (WLTP cycle) or 683km per ICAT, significantly improving from the SUV’s earlier claimed 418km due to a newer battery and better aerodynamics.
With two electric motors driving all four wheels, it has a combined power of 408hp and 660Nm of torque. Volvo claims an acceleration from 0 to 100kph in 4.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the XC40 Recharge. The C40 Recharge supports fast charging with a 150kW DC charger, allowing it to reach 100 percent charge in just 27 minutes.
EVs have caught fire before
Electric vehicles catching fire has become a common problem. Recently, electric scooters, especially, have faced issues like short circuits and overcharging, leading to fires. In 2022, many electric scooters and even electric cars caught fire, challenging the Indian Government’s plan to make the country a top market for electric vehicles.
To address safety concerns, the Government insisted that electric vehicle manufacturers implement strong safety measures. In the past few years, the Government took strict actions against certain electric vehicle makers, closely watching them to enhance safety standards. Some companies were specifically directed to improve manufacturing practices and make their products safer.
Despite safety worries, the electric vehicle market is growing significantly. Ather Energy, Ola Electric, Okinawa, and Ampere Electric dominate the two-wheeler category. Tata Motors leads the passenger car segment, with other brands like MG, Hyundai, BYD, and Mahindra following. Established automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, and Renault are also expected to enter the electric vehicle market soon.
