We have several examples from the past where government officials were seen misusing their power and authority over the common man. Hundreds of cases like this happen across the country. With the increase in the use of smartphones and social media, people have started coming forward and reporting such incidents, and many of them even post videos of such incidents online to expose these officers. One such incident was recently reported from Madhya Pradesh where two men were thrashed for allegedly overtaking the Sub Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) car. A video of the same incident has gone viral on the internet, and action has also been taken.

The incident was reported last week, where two men were assaulted for allegedly overtaking the official vehicle of the SDM. The incident took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Umaria district. In the video that has been circulating online, we can see a Maruti XL6 with a shattered rear windscreen in the middle of the road. There are a couple of men around the vehicle, and suddenly we see a man waving a huge stick and hitting the person standing next to the XL6.
The men seen in the video are SDM Amit Singh and Tehsildar Vinod Kumar, and their associates. These men allegedly assaulted two men after they overtook the SDM’s car. The men were mercilessly hit using the stick. The police were informed about the ongoing issue, and when they reached the spot, they discovered a damaged XL6 MPV, and the injured men were lying next to the car. The police took them immediately to the nearest hospital. The victims in this case have been identified as Shivam Yadav and Prakash Dahiya. Prakash Dahiya informed the police that they were traveling from Khairi to Bharoula when they encountered the SDM’s vehicle on the road. When Shivam Yadav did not give way to the SDM’s car, it led to the incidents mentioned above.
While the SDM’s vehicle had blocked their path, another vehicle that belonged to Tehsildar approached from the opposite direction. After this, the officers along with their drivers pulled the men out of the car and thrashed them. Kotwali Police Inspector Rajesh Chandra Mishra, speaking to the media, confirmed that a case has been registered against SDM Amit Singh, Tehsildar Vinod Kumar, and two others under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The case was registered based on the medical reports and statements of the victims.
Soon after this incident, District Collector Buddhesh Kumar Vaidya informed that SDM Amit Singh has been immediately removed from his position pending a thorough investigation by the police. This is not the first time we have come across an incident like this. The officials did claim that the men in the Maruti XL6 were drunk and had nearly crashed into their official vehicle. Even if that was true, this was not the right way to treat them. As responsible government servants, they should have ideally stopped the vehicle and informed the police to take action against them. Beating the men with sticks for not giving way is a clear case of road rage. There has been an increase in the number of road rage cases lately, and we would request all our readers to remain patient and also install a dash camera in their vehicles to prove their innocence in case of such incidents.
