Formula 1 recently turned away Andretti Cadillac’s application to compete in F1 by 2025 or 2026, which was supported by a lengthy list of justifications that has ruffled feathers throughout the motorsports culture.
The FIA, Formula 1’s governing authority, had previously approved Andretti Cadillac’ entry last year, which made this decision even more surprising.
Formula 1 Management noted: “While the Andretti name carries recognition for some Formula One fans, our research indicates that Formula One would bring value to the Andretti brand rather than the other way around.”
“Our assessment process has established that the presence of an 11th team would not, on its own, provide value to the championship.
“The most significant way in which a new entrant would bring value is by being competitive. We do not believe that the applicant would be a competitive participant.”
Not long after F1’s dismissal of Andretti Cadillac’s 2025-2026 season application, which would pause the team’s Formula 1 entry until 2028, the team issued a statement of disagreement. On the following Friday, a second statement which read:
“Andretti Cadillac would like to address two initial topics in the statement released by Formula One Management:
“When Andretti Cadillac entered the FIA expression of interest process almost a year ago, the preferred first year of participation was indicated as 2025. The FIA approved our application, with no specific limitation on whether the entry was for 2025 or 2026.
“Andretti Cadillac has been operating with 2026 as the year of entry for many months now. The technicality of 2025 still being part of the application is a result of the length of this process.
“We were not aware that the offer of a meeting had been extended and would not decline a meeting with Formula One Management.
“An in-person meeting to discuss commercial matters would be and remains of paramount importance to Andretti Cadillac. We welcome the opportunity to meet with Formula One Management and have written to them confirming our interest.
“Our work continues at pace.”
Formula 1’s denial doesn’t determine the ultimate fate of Andretti Cadillac’s campaign to join Formula One. The team could potentially be approved to race in 2026 after F1 releases new rules, but it is also possible that the team may have to wait until 2028, the year that Cadillac plans to supply its own hybrid power units.
