Finals are approaching, and Minami invites Tsubasa and Sayuri over for a study party. She breaks out a Hokkaido classic: Pokka Sapporo Ribbon Napolin Orange, which I may just have to order sometime to confirm whether it’s the perfect drink for studying (I also just love orange pop). While it looks like Tsubasa’s on top of his studies, I’m a lot more worried about Minami, who is easily bored and distracted.
Time flies when the three are having fun, so much so that Tsubasa stays out past his curfew. On his way out he accidentally lands in Minami’s mom’s chest, but she isn’t mad and gives him a ride home, telling him how happy she is he was able to cheer Minami up with the piano. But none of that matters to Tsubasa’s incredibly strict grandmother, who treats this breach of curfew like he was caught shoplifting.

Not helping matters is the introduction of a third beautiful girl in Tsubasa’s life: Natsukawa Rena (Ueda Reina) who cuts a captivating figure in the snow with her white-pink hair and delicate features—even when she’s using a branch to shoo off crows (something I would not recommend as they remember faces, especially hers!) He encounters her up close and personal in the library, where she compliments his posture and runs her hand down his back to assess his musculature.
Don’t get me wrong: Rena is lovely, and looks to be a nice addition to his circle of friends, but since missing curfew Tsubasa is on probation, and has to turn down Minami’s next study party invitation because as much fun as he had, he can’t focus unless he studies alone. His grandmother is about to have him perform tea ceremony when there’s a knock at the door. It’s Rena, who is his next door neighbor. Clearly a fan of Japanese history, she’s so enchanted by his traditional dress that she hugs him.
When his grandmother sees them she yells at Tsubasa, but Rena suddenly snaps into perfect formal Japanese language and behavior in apologizing, as she slipped and fell into Tsubasa, who was kind enough to catch her. That’s all well and good, but the fact Tsubasa lingers at the door well after she leaves tells his gran that sterner measures will be needed to ensure he maintains mental fortitude.
To that end, she issues an ultimatum: He will score in his school’s top ten on his next text, or she’ll send him back to Tokyo. That’s a potential bummer, but I have a feeling he’ll pull through this.
