In Syracuse, New York, there is a high school that hasn’t banished Auto Shop classes to the history bin. In fact, since 2006, the Automotive Technology class of East Syracuse Minoa High School – dubbed the Spartan Garage – has been not only providing a place for students to learn about the basics of the automobile, they have been giving students the chance to rescue, restore and modify a vehicle each school year that is given away as part of a raffle. Yes, you read that correctly: high school students get the chance to work as a team to build a neat street machine for a grade, like this 1951 Dodge B-3-B street machine. Suddenly, you might feel a bit cheated by your own high school auto shop experience.

Initially, the program started out modifying and repairing cars in the local area, but after a build went south due to the owner’s financial situation taking a turn, the Spartan Garage builds were brought in-house. The vehicles are purchased using the proceeds of the prior years’ raffle. Some of those proceeds also go towards supporting students who are graduating and are moving into jobs, the military or college. According to student Connor Fitzgerald, “This is an OCC class run through high school, so I’m getting college credit. I’m learning the basics and I’ll be ready to move on to the next step. The knowledge I’m getting in this class will help me in real life and carry over to college.”

Over the years, the Spartan Garage has turned out some very enviable builds, including Cobra kit car builds, Camaros and Mustangs, a Chevelle, a Super Bee, a Wildcat and an early Thunderbird, among others. Last year’s vehicle was a 33 Hot Rod kit car from Factory Five Racing. As-found, the “Job-Rated”-era Dodge truck had already been a bit of a build. Featuring a modified frame, a 360-cu.in. small-block and a 727 automatic, the Dodge was supposed to be a family rebuild project, but when that plan fizzled out, the school acquired the hot rod. Paperwork was a bit of a challenge, considering the truck had last been titled in 1958, but once the legalities were out of the way, the students got down to business.

While a changeover from the previous green paint to a color dubbed “My Boy Blue” is the most obvious sign of work from the students, there was plenty more to deal with. The engine and transmission’s health had to be verified, and the carburetor needed a proper go-through. Working through the electrical system and dealing with already-modified items offer up a challenge. Fitting heat, air conditioning and power windows into a truck of this vintage provides a special challenge for the students, but the plan is to have a road-ready vehicle that a lucky raffle winner can drive away in by July 2024. In the meantime, you can catch the truck as it is shown off at nearby car shows and events.
