Despite the implementation of new artificial intelligence (AI) cameras across Kerala, road accidents in the state have surged. In 2023 alone, there was an alarming increase of over 4,000 cases. However, on a somewhat brighter note, the number of fatalities resulting from road accidents has seen a decline.
In 2023, Kerala recorded a staggering 48,141 road accident cases, as per police data. This figure represents a substantial rise from the 43,910 cases reported in 2022 and the 33,296 cases reported in 2021, indicating a surge of 4,231 cases from the previous year. On average, the state witnessed approximately 131 accidents each day.
Regarding fatalities, the state recorded 4,010 deaths due to road accidents in 2023, marking a decrease of 307 deaths compared to 2022. However, while the number of deaths decreased, the number of injuries rose by 5,062 cases. In 2023, a total of 54,369 individuals sustained injuries from road accidents, compared to 49,307 in 2022 and 40,204 in 2021.
A senior official from the motor vehicle department (MVD) emphasized that the reduction in fatalities signifies the effectiveness of enforcement activities. These activities, including the installation of AI cameras, aim to curtail fatal accidents and have potentially saved hundreds of lives. Furthermore, there has been a noticeable decrease in head injuries, suggesting an increase in helmet usage among motorcycle riders.

The official attributed the surge in reported accidents to an encouraging trend where even minor accidents are being reported to the police. This shift in behavior signifies a positive change in attitudes toward road safety and law enforcement.
However, road safety expert Anil Kumar Pandala expressed skepticism about the impact of AI cameras, suggesting that many of them may not be genuinely AI-enabled. Pandala highlighted improper law enforcement as a significant factor contributing to the rising number of accidents. He pointed out issues such as inadequate pedestrian infrastructure and illegal roadside advertising screens diverting drivers’ attention.
There have been many strange incidents involving AI Cameras of Kerala
In light of these challenges, the MVD is contemplating the use of AI-enabled drones for traffic law enforcement. A proposal has been submitted to the state government to procure over 200 AI drone cameras, replacing speed-detecting vehicles with drones that can operate from any part of the district. These drones would be equipped with powerful AI cameras and could detect traffic violations within a five-kilometer radius during each operation. The MVD is prepared to collaborate with institutions such as IITs to implement this project effectively. Only time will tell if the drones are both effective as well as economical for large scale usage to detect traffic offences.
