Long-distance travel in the modern day looks pretty much the same: fill up at a fuel station that has enough food and snacks to qualify as a small grocery store, hit the Interstate to drive at 70-80 miles per hour with the cruise control on, and only stop when there is a need, such as food for the body, fuel for the machine, or that all-important “…but I gotta go!” yowl from the passengers who are in an urgent need of the facilities. We like to wax poetic about the days before the Interstate system, where small diners and fuel stations with garages attached were the normal, but the truth is harsh: those visions of the past are at best an endangered species. Now the Interstates are full of truck stops that cover a quarter of a county, gas stations big enough to land a small aircraft at, and a mixture of fast-food stops and a virtual warehouse that supplies everything from all the snacks you could possibly devour to clothes, knick-knacks, sunglasses and more. The old shops with two gas pumps and a small bathroom attached are a long way in the rearview mirror, friend. That is, unless you are willing to leave the Interstate and visit a more lonesome highway…
