I’ll say this of Natsukawa Rena: She knows what she wants and she doesn’t hesitate to get it. When she hears that Tsubasa wants to not only do well on his exams, but is seeking a high ranking, she offers to tutor him … in a special library storage room where she’ll have him “all for herself”.
While Tsubasa isn’t sure he’ll be able to focus in the presence of such an ethereal beauty, there’s no doubting Rena’s academic bona fides: she’s ranked Number One. Beauty and brains.
When Minami spots Tsubasa arriving at school with Rena and chatting with her, she’s astonished and “jelly” that he’s friends with her, and is just happy to have gotten her “Rena Sighting” first thing in the morning.
Little does she know Rena represents her competition not just for Tsubasa’s time, but his heart as well! When she asks again if Tsubasa wants to study with her, he gently declines, and you can tell Minami is disappointed.
She’d be even more disappointed to learn that Tsubasa is keeping his after-school one-on-one tutoring sessions (and nightly phone calls) with Rena a secret. He’s worried if he explains what’s going on he’ll only make her worry, or worse, blame herself for his studying struggles.
Another thing he keeps from her? If Tsubasa ranks in the Top Ten, he has to go on a date with her. As soon as he heard that he should have known keeping things from Minami was a mistake.
Tsubasa doesn’t just make the Top Ten, but ends up at Number 3, while Rena retains her top spot. That means the date is on, and it’s clear Rena genuinely digs Tsubasa, and not just because he looks handsome in traditional Japanese garb.
She’s also inspired by his determination to do his best, and smitten with his polite, gentle nature. Why don’t we hear of Rena turning down guys left and right? Maybe because she spends so much time in the library, or maybe they’re intimidated by her beauty.
In any case, I don’t know if Rena will be content with just one date. She doesn’t even care what they do on their first one; as long as she’s hanging out with him, she’s over the moon. Meanwhile, Minami did horribly on her exams, and it’s implied if she’d kept studying with Tsubasa she would have done better.
She’s clearly down in the dumps, sleeping in that Saturday only to get a text from her mom about Tsubasa being on a date with another girl! Even if she and Tsubasa aren’t dating, it’s clear she likes the guy. If she finds out he and Rena were spending all this time together behind her back, it’s sure to sting.
