Horimiya: Piece’s final outing is focused on the central couple, as Kyouko oversleeps and Izumi has to brush her hair and decides to put it in a bun. At first Kyouko freaks out, but when Izumi insists she’s cute and everyone at school concurs, she looks forward to Izumi doing her hair again. She also does his hair, and while it’s not as successful, it’s still cute as hell that she did it.
The segment that follows is the last time the entire nine-person ensemble is in the same place, as one by one they pitch in straightening out the StuCo room before graduation. This is an opportunity for them to rank each other by strength, and also results Shuu finding a beach postcard, inspiring him to suggest they all go on a beach trip together.
After those two present-day segments, Piece takes a look back to when Kyouko gradually built up her circle of friends. Izumi isn’t in the picture, we see how distant and shy Remi is, we see Kyouko stop and help Sakura with papers she dropped when the “cool girls” bumped into her. Eventually she has Remi, Sakura, Yuki, Tooru, Sengoku, and Shuu in her circle, but she feels like someone is missing…and it’s not Yanagi!
Kyouko’s friendship and eventual romance with Miyamura Izumi starts with nothing more consequential or dramatic than her simply dropping her flip phone on the ground. When it lands under his chair, Kyouko can’t recall his name, but he picks it up and hands it to her. This turns out to be Izumi daydreaming while Kyouko rests her head in his lap as they sit under the kotatsu. He marvels at all of the little coincidences that had to occur for them to find each other.
But Kyouko believes they’d have eventually found each other, and fell for one another, even if that exact sequence of events didn’t occur. At any rate, when the two graduate from high school they’ve never been closer or more comfortable with each other, to the point you could totally see them getting hitched before college. This sequence is such a sweet way to close out the season, markin a return to last season’s magic.
But before they continue their future together, they take their time enjoying their present, as Kyouko invites Izumi to her house the day after graduation. He comes four hours late due to oversleeping, but is armed with ample treats from his family’s bakery as a peace offering. However, Kyouko isn’t mad at him, she’s apprehensive because she went to a salon and they chopped all her hair off!
I fully agree with Izumi that the new boyish ‘do looks great on Kyouko, and she really has nothing to worry about. He even gets his hair cut shorter than it’s ever been to “normalize” their hair lengths. Kyouko’s shorter hair also makes her look more mature, like Izumi’s future wife.
It’s long been clear that Kyouko is far from the lowest-maintenance (or least violent) girlfriend around, but it’s just as clear she loves Izumi, and he loves her, making it all worth it. And I maintain that Horimiya taking a look back and giving us these additional looks that enrich both their relationship and those of all their friends, made Piece worth it as well. Yet again, I’ll miss these lovable dorks.
