UConn will continue to play men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s hockey games at the XL Center, now that the Board of Trustees has approved a $1.55 agreement with Global Spectrum/Oak View Group, the management company that operates the arena for the city of Hartford.
The approval was anticipated. There was some controversy earlier this year over UConn’s continuing to play off campus games, because of the rent involved, the completion of the new on-campus hockey arena and the potential for state budget cuts, but those issues were smoothed out. Though UConn coaches and players often express a preference to play on campus, the relationship between the university, the state and the downtown Hartford arena goes back decades.
Settled in new building with national champion neighbors, UConn men’s hockey looks to take next step
The men’s basketball team, defending national champs, will play eight games at XL this season, same as in 2022-23. The Huskies will play Stonehill on Nov. 11, Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 14, Manhattan on Nov. 24 and Big East opponents St. John’s on Dec. 23, Georgetown on Jan. 14, Xavier Jan. 28, Butler Feb. 6 and Marquette Feb. 17. Other home games will be at Gampel Pavilion.
The women’s team, will again play seven seven games at XL Center, starting with Dayton at the XL Center on Nov. 8, followed by Louisville, Dec. 16, Butler Dec. 18, Marquette Dec. 31, Providence Jan. 10, Seton Hall Feb. 7 and Creighton Feb. 19.
The men’s hockey team played 12 games at XL last season, but that number will be reduced with the new Toscano Family Ice Forum open. The Huskies will play UMass-Lowell on Oct. 28 in Hartford, Dartmouth on Nov. 25, Maine on Jan. 12 and 13 and host the Connecticut Ice event, which includes Yale, Sacred Heart and national champ Quinnipiac, Jan. 26 and 27.
UConn’s first athletic annual report released. Here’s what it shows on spending gap and successes
With fewer hockey games in Hartford, UConn’s financial commitment was reduced by $250,000, from $1.8 million a year ago. The agreement includes, according to the Board of Trustees agenda, a per game license fee and the facility fee, in the form of a ticket surcharge, for each ticket sold up to 12,450 for men’s and women’s basketball games and 4,600 for men’s ice hockey games.
According to the UConn Athletics annual report released last month, the university spends $7.5 million per year to play games off campus, including football games at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. UConn Athletics ran with a $35 million deficit for the last fiscal year. The report asserted that UConn athletics generated $150 million in economic output statewide.
