Chevrolet’s Task Force line of trucks offers a great platform for customization. Any of a number of Chevrolet V8 engines will more or less bolt right into an Apache and who doesn’t like more cubic inches when it comes to modifying good, old American iron?
Currently offered at no reserve on Hemmings Auctions, this 1958 Chevrolet Apache 3100 Fleetside pickup is the recipient of just such a cubic-inch infusion. The leading “V” character in the VIN indicates that Chevrolet installed a 283-cu.in. small-block V8 at the factory, an engine rated at 160 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The “Trademaster,” as Chevy dubbed the 283, was surely a perfectly good engine for hauling stuff around. But that’s not what’s under the hood today.
This truck now sports a Chevy 454-cu.in. V8. The seller acquired the Apache with the big-block engine already installed and does not know its origin or history, but it’s had some work done to it as it features an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and exhales via tubular steel headers. The seller calls this Apache a “sleeper,” and backs it up with a short burnout video showing the 454’s torque easily overcoming the grip of the “All Terrain Wildcat LT” tires on pavement. The transmission is a truck-grade four-speed manual with an extra-low first gear, a.k.a. a “granny gear,” for those times when the most torque multiplication is needed for true hauling or towing tasks.
Mounted on the firewall in its own sheet metal box are a trio of gauges: oil pressure, water temperature and voltage. Switches for main power, an auxiliary fan and a pushbutton starter are also mounted in the box. The seller notes that there is also an interior “master kill switch” and the vehicle is typically started with the key from the cab.
The “sleeper” notion surely comes from the fact that the Apache looks a lot like the worn out work truck it almost certainly was. The seller has documentation that the truck had previous owners in Montana, but does not know its full history. Some vestigial signage on the door listing the GVWR suggests it was used in some commercial or official capacity.
The passenger’s side of the vehicle looks relatively intact, though the fender does not match the body. The driver’s side, tailgate and hood all sport the sort of thorough surface rust that can be generously described as “heavy patina.” The seller does share that there are some “small holes” in the passenger’s side kick panel, the cab corners, and lower door hinges, but the rest is otherwise indicated as solid. The inside of the bed is a bit rough and features a plywood floor.
Inside presents with similar aging, as surface rust appears on both doors, the floors and the dashboard. A woven blanket covers whatever old upholstery remains on the wide bench seat.
The seller had the idea of turning this iconic Task Force model into a drag truck, but this machine just doesn’t fit into his current plans. The truck’s less than perfect condition is another reason he cites for offering the truck at no reserve on Hemmings Auctions. Take a closer look at this 1958 Chevrolet Apache Fleetside pickup and decide for yourself if you think it’s a sleeper that could be a keeper.
