UConn center Donovan Clingan is expected to miss about a month after suffering a foot strain in practice earlier this week, the team announced Friday.
Clingan is expected to fully recover by the end of October and be ready for the start of the season.
The 7-foot-2 sophomore averaged 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in just 13.1 minutes per game last season and was named to the Big East All-Freshman team. He is expected to be one of the leaders of the program this season as it looks to defend its 2023 national title.
“Donovan, he’s just got a great personality and a great vibe about him, so everybody loves to coach him and everyone loves being on the team with him because he’s so alive and he’s so much fun to be around,” head coach Dan Hurley said after Tuesday’s practice, prior to the injury.
“The evolution for him is demand the ball and demand that his teammates play up to a certain level. Sometimes you’ve got to be the bad guy, too. You just can’t be kind of a jolly giant, sometimes you’ve got to be the angry giant.”
Clingan, the two-time Gatorade Connecticut High School Player of the Year at Bristol Central, received MVP honors after UConn claimed the Phil Knight Invitational in-season tournament. He posted 15 points and 10 rebounds in the title game against Iowa State.
Hurley and staff were preparing Clingan to step into the starting role after the departure of Adama Sanogo, the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, to the NBA.
UConn’s season begins Nov. 6 with Northern Arizona at Gampel Pavilion.
