Tulsa Muscle

Mecum wraps another auction at Tulsa’s Expo Square, June 9-10, with nearly 600 cars crossing the block and no shortage of muscle cars changing hands. One of the auction’s top-10 sales was this beefed-up 1970 Dodge Challenger that underwent an extensive restoration and a lot of customized touches. Finished at the end of 2022, it only registered 20 miles on the odometer since completion and it is fitted with a 392 SRT Hemi crate engine finished in bright orange. The Hemi is mated up to a Tremec TKX 5-speed that had also painted orange and was finished with an aluminum Pistol Grip shifter. On the dyno, the muscular Dodge belted out at 492 horsepower. Other customized goodies include a 4-link rear suspension setup, adjustable coilover shocks, multi-port fuel-injection; many other upgrades were fully documented in two binders, which accompanied the car. When the bidding ceased, the Plum Crazy Mopar sold for $159,500.
Also crossing the block was a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle that is powered with a 427 Tri-Power setup. Its transmission is a Muncie 4-speed and other highlights include: power steering, 4-wheel disc brakes, a 12-bolt rear end and aluminum radiator. The silver-and-black Chevelle fetatured a polished finish on the alternator, valve covers and radiator support covers, underneath the Stinger-style hood. Rolling away on its US Mags wheels, the low-mileage (43,769 showing on the odometer) Chevelle sold for $59,400.

Barrett-Jackson Bullitt Time

Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas Auction achieved $30.8 million in total sales while raising $865,000 for charity. Among the 496 no reserve vehicles to find a new home were a pair of Mustang Bullitt tributes from the iconic Steve McQueen movie of the same name. Built from the ground-up by the company Brand New Muscle Cars, its construction began with a Ford shell in 2020 and it’s powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote engine paired with a 6-speed automatic. In addition, the driver can wind through the gears with a manual option and shifter that looks like the one in the movie. The customized “Bullitt” features many modern touches mixed in including Wilwood disc brakes, Heidts IFS, Vintage Air and a modern sound system compatible with all of today’s technology. Titled as a 1968 Mustang, it was only driven 990 miles since completion and it sold for a whopping $242,000.
The other “Bullitt” was a restoration recreation with some customized elements. It’s powered by a Ford FE 390 big-block and a four-speed Toploader with 8-inch rear end. All exterior trim and proper Highland Green paint were new with the proper blackouts, reverse light delete, removed items such as mirrors, emblems and antenna, plus a highly detailed engine bay down to the decals. Inside the appearance was correct with a 4-speed Hurst shifter, wood-grain style trim and 3-spoke steering wheel, but modern conveniences sprinkled in that included a Bluetooth stereo. The entire restoration was photo documented and the homage car sold for $88,000.
