Bringing Down The House At The 2023 NMRA World Finals And Holley Ford Fest

September is an automotive enthusiast’s dream in Kentucky. Among the many shows that are filling in the space between the humid heat of summer and the first falling leaves of Autumn, Bowling Green is home to three large-scale shows: LS Fest East, MoParty, and the NMRA World Finals/Ford Fest show. All of these events are rooted with the presence and the support of Holley, and all have proven to be wildly successful in bringing like-minded gearheads into Beech Bend Raceway for a weekend of non-stop racing and action. With a schedule so loaded with events that fans will have to pick and choose what they want to see, varying forms of racing going on all day long, a large manufacturer’s midway, an off-road section and more, these events bring in the cars and crowds.

Unlike LS Fest and MoParty, however, Ford Fest isn’t completely a Holley show. Instead, they paired off with the NMRA World Finals event, the final points race of the season on the NMRA calendar, and the car show portion is judged like an NMRA event as well. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s the same event. There are celebrities to mingle with and meet, there’s one of the “Bigfoot” monster trucks towering over virtually everything but the timing tower, and there’s not one, but two burnout contests to enjoy on Saturday night: one, an Australian-style version with plenty of open space for contestants to go wild in, and the other a standstill-style example that is part of Lue Creative’s “Retro Meet”, a 1980s-themed party that was held late Saturday night.

Ford Fest is the final event of the year for Holley; their 2024 schedule won’t be announced until early next year but will include LS Fest West at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada and LS Fest Texas at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. The NMRA will also announce dates for their 2024 season at a later date, but expect the first event to be the Spring Break Shootout in Orlando, Florida sometime around March.

Ford Fest 2023 - Bigfoot

An icon in its own right and standing tall, Bigfoot 5 gave fans a massive photo opportunity. The Firestone Tundra tires were originally designed for a snow-going overland train project the U.S. Army was funding in the 1950s. Ford Fest 2023 - 1977 Ford Mustang II Classic II Convertible by Emess

A convertible Mustang II? They do exist, in tiny numbers. Converted by Emess Coach Builders, the “Classic II” cost over double the standard sticker of the mini-Mustang and for the money, owners would deal with wind noise, water leaks and NVH issues. Only 44 cars were completed, and Robert Kennedy’s ’77 is probably the nicest example you’ll ever get to see.Photo: Bryan McTaggart

Ford Fest 2023 - Bricklin

The rule of Ford Fest: it must be powered by a Ford engine. That means that non-Ford vehicles like Coy Hudnall’s 1975 Bricklin SV-1 are welcomed, so long as they have the 351 under the hood, and not the AMC 360 that early production cars came with. Photo: Bryan McTaggart

Ford Fest 2023 - Pontiac with Godzilla

Mike Bozzelli decided the best home for a 7.3L “Godzilla” V-8 was under the hood of a 1969 Pontiac Firebird. While the engine was installed in the Firebird, some finishing work (including a new Holley intake manifold) had to be performed on-site. While the car fought everyone who worked on it, by Sunday the project was running.Photo: Bryan McTaggart

Ford Fest 2023 - Sleeperdude's burnout

In the first burnout competition of Saturday night, Josh “Sleeperdude” Dillion returned to try for back-to-back wins after winning the burnout contest at MoParty two weeks prior. His “Dollar Gentral” Ford Pinto left the oval track of Beech Bend enveloped in a haze of roasted rubber. Ever thoughtful, Dillon rigged up LED lightbars so that he could be seen in the smoke.Photo: Bryan McTaggart

Ford Fest 2023 - Jared Pink

Jared Pink made the decision to take on all three Holley events with one car, a 1970 Plymouth Duster that was nearly condemned to the crusher. Powered by an LS3 at this year’s LS Fest East, a built Gen III Hemi at MoParty, and a 5.0L Coyote V8, Pink is the first to take the “Triple Crown”, having competed in the Grand Champion category at all three shows.Photo: Bryan McTaggart

Ford Fest 2023 - Jet Dragsters

A treat for drag racing fans, Elaine Larsen (far lane) and Josette Roach brought their jet dragsters out to add fire and fury to the racing scene. Both the Florida Tech and House of Kolor dragsters are powered by General Electric J85 turbojets with afterburners. Photo: Bryan McTaggart
