A one-owner, low-volume muscle car with pedigree and a legendary engine, an elemental British sports car, and an early, award-winning Corvette are included in this week’s round up. We also look at a final-year E-type roadster, an honest early postwar Chevy truck and a classic ’51 Oldsmobile convertible with its Rocket V8. A total of 56 cars reached the final bid on Hemings Auctions from September 24 through September 30. We helped find new homes for 45 vehicles, including 17 via post-auction Make Offer listings, to achieve a net sell-through rate of 80 percent.

1966 Dodge Charger Hemi

We previously looked at this 1966 Dodge Charger Hemi in detail a couple of weeks back, marveling at the idea of one of these vaunted muscle cars still being in the hands of its original owner. Clearly, we weren’t the only ones enamored with this special Mopar. The B-body garnered over 30,000 views and some 64 bids in total, including 34 in the last hour, half of those extending the auction. (Any bid within the last two minutes or later of the scheduled auction end time at Hemmings Auctions extends the auction by two additional minutes to prevent last-minute “sniping.”) In total, four bidders were heavily competing for this vehicle, which explains the results easily exceeding the expected market range.
1951 Oldsmobile 98 Deluxe Convertible Coupe

One of the final cars listed as part of The John McTaggart Collectin, this 1951 Oldsmobile 98 Deluxe Convertible Coupe had been restored in 2012 by the seller to a level befitting Oldsmobile’s top-of-the-line model for 1951. Its Canto Cream finish was highlighted by its extensive brightwork, with the chrome described by the seller as “unsurpassed.” The seller noted an authentic restoration that included a rebuild of the Rocket V8 by a marque specialist. While the car failed to clear reserve during the timed auction period, within 24 hours the seller accepted an offer fairly close to the original reserve and well within the expected market range for this classic convertible.
1974 Jaguar E-type Series 3 Convertible

This 1974 Jaguar E-type Series 3 Convertible, from the final year of the E-type’s storied run, looked to be in excellent condition, with the seller noting just 200 miles since the car was restored. Accompanying the sale was an AACA National First Prize Senior Award from 2022, attesting to its quality. While earlier E-types appeal to perhaps a more sporting crowd, Series 3 models with the smooth V12 under the long, sinuous hood, offer a different sort of motoring, given the car’s longer wheelbase and wider track. Though this Jag failed to meet reserve during the live auction, it racked up over 40,000 views and finally scored an offer that satisfied the seller and was squarely in market range.
1954 Chevrolet 3100

A later example of the company’s “Advance Design” pickup, this 1954 Chevrolet 3100 is recognizable for its one-piece windshield that was adopted later in the model’s run. This example was noted to be from Canadian production and restored perhaps in the 1990s. The truck appeared to be largely authentic with what was believed to be its original Thriftmaster 235-cu.in. OHV inline-six under the hood. It featured a clean engine bay, reupholstered seat and the most minimal of chrome on the exterior. The Sunsand Beige finish extended to the painted components of the interior and engine bay. The honest-looking truck sold on 11 bids right in the middle of the recent market range.
1949 MG TC

A vintage MG TC offers the sports car experience at its most elemental: a lightweight vehicle with a modest powerplant, narrow tires and only the bare minimum of weather protection. All feature right-hand drive. This 1949 MG TC boasted of a 1990s-era restoration that appeared to be holding up well, with very presentable paint, interior upholstery and wood, to go along with a clean engine bay and undercarriage. The seller shared that the vehicle included its numbers-matching XPAG engine, bored .040-inches over during its rebuild. Though it failed to reach reserve during the live auction period, it sold following 10 offers as a Make Offer listing, eventually besting that original reserve.

Early Vettes continue to shine among collectors, their appeal undeniable. This 1959 Chevrolet Corvette garnered a solid 38 bids on its way to exceeding not only its reserve by 35 percent, but even the top end of the going market rate by 2%. As we’ve pointed out here before, the quality of a vehicle is one of the biggest indicators of its ability to perform against the reserve and in relation to the going market rate. This car boasted of a body-off restoration in the 1990s that yielded an NCRS Top Flight award in 1995. The seller, who owned the vehicle since 2001, reported minimal use and a “mechanical clean-up and tune-up” completed in 2018. A very solid result for a seemingly high-quality vehicle.
