The Hemmings team’s 2023 Dodge Hornet GT project is buzzing along in the latest episode of A Swarm of One, presented by Dodge.
In the first episode, Mike Musto gave the crossover (or hot hatch, if you prefer) a full review while it was in stock form. Since then, the Dodge Hornet GT spent some time at Wesley Motorsports in Lansing, MI, in the hands of Kevin, who made some subtle modifications to prepare the car to fly down a dragstrip just a buzz faster in preparation for the Roadkill Nights event powered by Dodge in Michigan’s motor city.
The Dodge Hornet is powered by Dodge’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged Hurricane I4, sending up to 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to its all-wheel-drive system via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Watch as Kevin gives a rundown of the project, addresses issues that could occur, and shows us how even the slightest modifications to the suspension, wheels and tires can make a night and day difference to how a vehicle performs on the road. A quick on-road demonstration reveals massive handling improvements, plus the exhaust notes mysteriously sound clearer. Then, Kevin reveals what powertrain modifications can be done with the help of Direct Connection parts, and promptly gets to work with his team. (Ahem, did someone say “Nitrous”?)
Once the proposed changes are complete, Mike Musto takes the Hornet for a road test to see how the upgrades enhanced its overall handling and performance. Can the team make the Dodge Hornet GT launch harder and run quicker in time for the Roadkill Nights races?
