The heart of Southeast Asia’s vibrant capital city is now echoing with the sounds of thrilling wheelchair basketball competition as the IWBF Women’s U25 World Championship tipped off on Wednesday 3 October.
The Championship start was a delayed by a day because of the need to relocate the event following structural incident at the original venue shortly before the Opening Ceremony due to adverse weather conditions.
In the first game of the tournament, South Africa faced off against Canada. It was a hard-fought match, but Canada emerged victorious with a final score of 50-24.
Germany and Thailand engaged in a thrilling battle, but an impressive display of teamwork gave Germany the win, closing the game at 52-36.
Australia found themselves facing a formidable Great Britain team. Great Britain dominated with a score of 64-39, hinting at a strong presence in this year’s championship.
Day 2 brought a further flurry of exciting matches, with surprises, remarkable performances, and a glimpse into the future of women’s basketball.
The United States, another favourite in the tournament, demonstrated their supremacy with an 85-33 win over debutantes Spain, proving that they are a team to watch out for.
The second game of day two witnessed South Africa facing Germany, with Germany securing their second victory at 46-31. Germany quickly made it 3-0, with a commanding victory over Japan, 65-11, led by a huge 27 points from Svenja Erni.
Thailand displayed their resilience again, this time against Canada, coming out victorious to secure their first-ever U25 World Championships victory, with a final score of 41-37.
Great Britain continued their winning streak with a 51-28 win over China. Meanwhile in a lopsided match, the United States once again dominated, this time against Australia, closing the game with a staggering score of 85-16.
Canada returned for their second match of the day, holding off a strong Japanese fightback to this time emerge victorious with a final score of 48-36.
Great Britain continued their strong performance with a 65-41 victory over Spain.
China and Australia faced off, with China securing a 62-43 win, while Thailand bested South Africa with a final score of 60-234, closing out the first day of matches in this thrilling tournament.
As the sun set on the second day of the 2023 U25 World Championships, fans are left eagerly anticipating the upcoming clashes. With intense competition and exceptional talent on display, it’s clear that this year’s championship promises to be an unforgettable one, with no shortage of excitement and drama to come.
