Westfalia camper vans have not been produced for the North American market for the last 20 years. Now they are making a comeback, but not in the classic Volkswagen form, lovingly referred to as “Westys” by those in the know. Instead, the new Westfalia vans will be based on a Ram ProMaster.
When the Westfalia-Werke company was bought out by Daimler-Chrysler in 2001, the production of pop-up VWs ceased, but even after decades passed, North American residents still hold the classic Volkswagen Westfalia near and dear to their hearts. That fan base paired with the recent uprise in the van life and adventure movement apparently caught the attention of Westfalia’s current owner, the French Groupe Rapido, as the Westfalia-Americas company plans to make a comeback in 2024.
Although Westfalia still offers VW camper conversions in Europe, the requirements necessary to certify the vehicles according to U.S. regulations are costly if not a bit far-fetched. Another option would have been for Westfalia to continue using the Mercedes Metris van as a base for camper conversions, however that model is leaving the North American market next year, hence the switch to the Ram ProMaster.
Westfalia’s pre-production model is a class B van with an integrated pop-up roof. It may be smaller than many of the huge “house on wheels” RVs commonly seen on the road, but the van can sleep up to six people. The flexible layout reportedly has plenty of room for cargo storage even if the sleeping spots are maxed out, and the smaller size means it’s easier to get to more places in tight spaces.
A report from RV Business stated that Roadtrek, an RV and camper coachbuilder based in Ontario, Canada, will be assembling the new ProMaster-based Westfalia campers. Roadtrek is already familiar with the chassis and offers a slew of Ram ProMaster van upfit models, so the Westfalia conversion van will be in good hands. Costs have not yet been released and the companies are still planning out a dealer network, but more details are expected to come within the next couple of months.
