Dramatizing the larger-than-life true story of drug smuggler-turned-DEA informant Barry Seal, American Made also touched upon other real-life personalities like Pablo Escobar, George Bush, and Seal’s own wife Deborah (renamed Lucy). Tom Cruise, who is no stranger to flying aircrafts both on and off-screen, played the infamous aviator. The movie reveals how the commercial pilot was hired by the CIA in 1978 to fly stealth missions over Central America before he also got involved with the Medellín Cartel, the drug cartel famously portrayed in Netflix’s Narcos. Faring well with critics and audiences, the 2017 movie did a fair job of dramatizing Seal’s life.
