The Spring and Fall Carlisle Collector Car Flea Market, Corral & Auction shows are the book ends to the brand-specific events that are hosted at the fairgrounds every year. The 2023 edition of the Fall show holds a particular distinction, in that it celebrates the 50th anniversary of this specific show. As with any multi-day event that is held outdoors, the weather is always a critical factor and this year there were a few days with less than stellar forecasts, but that didn’t keep attendees away.
While you may think that these shows are only geared towards buying and selling cars, and parts, the reality is that most automotive services that are geared towards the automotive collector community can be found during the weekend at the show. Beyond those, you will also find vendors selling numerous items that are to some degree automotive related, like diecast, and literature, and some that have absolutely no connection.
Paul Teutul, Jr. partnered with American Collectors Insurance to build this exquisite 1939 Lincoln Zephyr three-window coupe. Known for his custom chopper builds, this was an outside-the-box project for him. The car has several custom features, like the extended front fenders that flow to the rear. Under the hood lies a stock 12-cylinder flathead, and it rides on a stock chassis that has been fitted with air ride suspension. Photo: John Machaqueiro
As with every Carlisle show, there is always a special event that is planned. This year there was an automotive unveiling that took place: Paul Teutul, Jr. of Paul Jr. Designs and Orange County Choppers fame partnered with the folks at American Collector Insurance to build a promotional vehicle for them. While most individuals are familiar with the over-the-top custom bikes that he has designed, the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr three-window coupe he unveiled is a departure for him. He claims that when it comes to cars like these, he is a purist, and one of the stipulations he had was to have full control over every aspect of the project, so when the cover was pulled off the car, that was the first time that his client had seen it. It was extremely well received by the large crowd that was on hand to watch the cover come off.
For the diehards that are restoring a vehicle, NOS or reproduction parts are usually on their list. These Carlisle shows are the analog versions of all the online auction sites where parts can be found. The ability to see what you’re buying in person, and the opportunity to haggle for a better price are some of the benefits to these events. The same in-person experience applies to buying a collector car.
For their entire 2024 calendar, the folks at Carlisle Events will celebrate their 50th Anniversary. Spring Carlisle will take place on April 17 – 24, 2024, while the Fall edition will be held on October 02-06, 2024.
The Spring and Fall Carlisle events are not just for cars and parts. There are plenty of items, many of them with a vintage feel that can be found throughout the fairgrounds. One example was this large display of beer tap handles right as you walked in the main gate.Photo: John Machaqueiro
There is no replacement for buying parts in person. You get to see and touch exactly what you’re buying, and you can haggle for a better price. When it comes to NOS GM parts for mid to late 60’s cars, a good source is Don Bock. He makes the trek to Carlisle for these events with a wide variety of rare NOS and reproduction parts.Photo: John Machaqueiro
This rough 1968 Plymouth GTX at one point had a 440 Big-block, 4-speed, and factory AC. The asking price was $8,500; however that amount also included an equally rough 1969 Plymouth Road Runner and 1969 Plymouth Satellite. Both of these were advertised as “parts cars.” Photo: John Machaqueiro
With the brand specific shows, Building T, Carlisle’s main display space is usually reserved for the themed displays that take place at each show. For the Fall show, this area was reserved for vintage toy vendors.Photo: John Machaqueiro
Buying a project at Carlisle means that sometimes you have to figure out how to get it home. Offered as a package deal, this 1963 Ford Econoline van and trailer had an asking price of $3,500 dollars. This was a logistics solution for someone looking for a Ford van project. Photo: John Machaqueiro
If it has wheels, it’s a safe bet that some examples of it can be found at Carlisle. This 1975 Honda CB550 in excellent condition was available for $4,000 dollars, or best offer. Photo: John Machaqueiro
This 1965 Chrysler New Yorker was single family owned since new and incredibly original. It was in excellent condition, and fully documented with only a tick over 24,000 miles on the odometer. The original price tag on this car was $4,392.55, while the asking price for all this originality came in at $24,000.Photo: John Machaqueiro
The Chevrolet Monza isn’t a model that sets the world on fire. Built during Detroit’s Malaise era, efforts were made to spice up the product line. As a one-year only option, GM offered the Monza Mirage. Outsourced to a company called Michigan Auto Techniques, it consisted of front and rear body panels, rear spoiler, and front air dam. These rare Mirage rear panels and spoiler would get someone halfway to replicating one.Photo: John Machaqueiro
There were a few Pro Street flavored cars up for sale. This 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS with an asking price of $54,000 grand looked to be a well-built car with a blown 358 cubic-inch small block. The claim was that it was highway friendly and never raced.Photo: John Machaqueiro
