Hemmings Auctions Weekly Round Up: 1974 Camaro Z28, 1999 Land Cruiser, 1965 Continental Convertible

A sharp, numbers-matching, all-around muscle car performer from the Seventies, an iconic four-door American luxury convertible and a Japanese SUV with a reputation for reliability and durability like few other vehicles on the road. We also dive into a ’57 Chevy Bel Air, a brash square body K10 and a less-common off-roader from International. A total of 78 cars reached the final bid on Hemings Auctions from October 1 through October 7. We found new homes for 50 vehicles, including 14 via post-auction Make Offer listing, to achieve a net sell-through rate of 64 percent.

This customized 1977 Chevrolet K10 Scottsdale was not for the shy type. Beyond its neon green finish, flared fenders, lifted stance and 37-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires, it featured a 396-cu.in. big-block V8 that was built to make big power, torque, and some, noise, too: 10.25:1 compression, Comp Cams 280-degree camshaft, Weiand intake, 650-cfm Holley four-barrel, a Moroso 8-quart poil pan and more. The lack of chrome and black-accented components instead gave the unique truck another distinctive element to its look. Bidding on this listing was curious as a single bidder placed four of the five total bids, including the final mark that crested the reserve two days before the auction ended.

Recent Market Range: $52,000-$68,000

The last four-door American convertible came from Lincoln, at a time when American cars were reaching their peak in size and scale. This 1965 Lincoln Continental Convertible had been the benefit of various refurbishment efforts over the years, including a refinish 20 years ago and an “extensive mechanical restoration” approximately 12 to 13 years ago. Overall, the car looked clean, though the engine bay looked tired and in need of significant detailing and the front bench seat showed lots of wrinkling in the leather upholstery. Still, these last of their kind American icons have grown significantly in value in recent years and this one sold for very close to what the market expected for such a car.

Recent Market Range: $32,000-$46,000

International’s Scout was a rugged, truck-tough, off-road utility vehicle. This 1972 International Scout II was taken from that factory-installed ruggedness to a new level by the seller who had recently restored it before listing the vehicle. The exterior was most recently refinished in 2003 and it was equipped with bucket seats in the front. The interior had bedliner material in place of any carpeting inside. AMP Terrain Master tires on Mayhem wheels completed the look. This Scout ultimately sold inside the expected market range as a Make Offer listing following its failure to meet reserve. It’s performance on bid may have been held back by a lack of underhood and undercarriage detailing.

Selling Price: $43,050

Recent Market Range: $43,000-$58,000

The ‘57 Chevy has a design that even non-car people recognize instantly. The Bel Air trim level gave customers a near-luxury experience, with more brightwork, distinctive quarter-panel trim and a deluxe interior as well. This 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe had been restored to an authentic level, with what was believed to be its original 283-cu.in. V8. This example appeared to be not quite at the concours level, but still presented rather nicely. An example of the minor demerits on this car were some underhood fasteners with surface corrosion. Perhaps such minor details kept this car from reaching reserve during bidding, but it still sold within the expected range as a Make Offer listing.

Out of production for 16 years now, Toyota’s J100-generaiton Land Cruiser remains a juggernaut in the luxury SUV market. Capable, reliable and as durable as any other vehicle on the road, the J100 continues to attract people who seemingly view six-figure odometer readings as a badge of honor. All Land Cruisers of this generation for the North American market were powered by Toyota’s 2UZ-FE, DOHC, 32-valve V8 engine. Plenty of J100 owners still use these remarkably capable vehicles as daily drivers. This 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser actually showed a modest 126,728 miles on its odometer, which surely helped lead to bidding that resulted in a final selling price 38% greater than the reserve.

American muscle was not dead in 1974! This 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 featured its original 350-cu.in. V8, which was rated at a respectable 245 horsepower when new. Other mechanical bits that made the Z28 a strong performer included its Muncie M21 close-ratio four-speed, a 3.73:1 Posi rear end and a heavy-duty suspension, complete with 15-inch tires and wheels. Though it boasted less than 28,000 miles, the car was reportedly restored eight years ago and the Silver Metallic exterior finish over red vinyl looked striking in the photos provided by the seller. Well-kept and well-presented cars will always resonate with bidders as this second-gen F-body did while achieving solid, market-correct results.
