A chip off the ol’ Block, Lia Block continues to impress racing fans with her skill and determination. Most recently, she, with co-driver Rhiannon Gelsomino, won the American Rally Association (ARA) Open 2WD Championship with just two rounds left to go in the season.
During her first full ARA rally season, the new rally champion has pulled off a feat that her late father, Ken Block, had strived for during his racing career. Ken Block was an impressive professional rally driver with the Hoonigan Racing Division, earning several runner-up and second place finishes in American rally. His 2022 ARA battle for the championship went down in the history books. Racing the stages with a no-expense-spared Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC car, Ken kept racing against all odds, even after hitting a tree during the technical 100 Acre Wood rally (round two of the race series), a deer hit at the DirtFish Olympus Rally (round three), and then surviving a crash during the season’s final round. Before the crash, Ken Block was 17 points ahead, leading overall.
This year, Lia is carrying on the legacy and taking the Block name back to the top. Lia Block piloted a freshly built Subaru BRZ adorned with tribute livery to achieve four wins and a runner-up, which put her at 86 points ahead of second-place 2WD competitor Nick Allen. Her co-pilot Rhiannon Gelsomino is the perfect partner, being the wife of Alex Gelsomino, Ken’s long-time co-driver, and the co-driver who joined Travis Pastrana for prior championship wins. Lia and Rhiannon now hold the two-wheel-drive American Rally Association title for 2023, which makes Lia Block the youngest winner in the series’ history.
Lia Block began getting her feet wet in rally by running a Ford Fiesta through its paces in seven ARA events last year. This year, she has pushed harder than ever, by earning an ARA Championship record, gaining experience in the Nitro Rallycross Championship, and by entering the Extreme E championship. And let’s not forget about her exhibition drive of Ken’s Hoonapigasus during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The Hoonigans and Lia Block announced on Instagram that she will be campaigning Ken Block’s Ford Escort Cosworth V2 at Lake Superior Performance Rally, the final round of the 2023 ARA National Rally Championship.
