Paige Bueckers is back. A healthy Azzi Fudd and Aaliyah Edwards look to start the season. Prized freshman Stephon Castle will take the court. And oh yeah, there’s a national title to defend.
There’s a lot to be excited about for UConn men’s and women’s basketball fans, and the best part? The season begins now.
UConn’s unofficial kickoff to the 2023-24 season takes place on Friday, as fans will pack Gampel Pavilion for ‘First Night.’ Festivities begin in Storrs at 5 p.m., with a block party outside the arena. Doors open at 6 p.m., there’s a pregame show at 6:30 and First Night officially begins at 7 p.m.
UConn said tickets for the event sold out in less than 15 hours. A select number were made available for UConn basketball donors and season ticket holders, while the rest were allocated for students. The event will air locally on WFSB-TV, and will be available to stream on UConn+.
Men’s and women’s players were drafted onto two teams, Blue and White, with both competing in different events throughout the night. Aaliyah Edwards and Alex Karaban were named White Team captains, while Paige Bueckers and Tristen Newton will be the Blue Team captains.

Festivities include a 3-point contest, though there won’t be a slam dunk contest as there was last year, when forward Samson Johnson won it.
Men’s basketball fans who didn’t get a ticket to First Night can catch the Huskies at the annual Blue-White Night on Oct. 25. The UConn men are set to open the season on Nov. 6 against Northern Arizona, while the women will first take the court on Nov. 4 against Southern Connecticut State. Both games are at Gampel Pavilion.
