There are so many words to describe the Dodge Viper. Audacious, bold, brawny, loud, burly, pugnacious, and fast are a few that come to mind. Words like quiet, reserved and tame will never make that list.
Though it started out a bit rough around the edges when the hand-built sports car debuted in 1992 with no windows, no exterior door handles, and extra toasty sills from the sidemount exhaust, Dodge’s V10-powered serpentine sports car grew up over the years. Not only did it turn into a world-class sports car, it turned into a world-beating race car with class victories at Le Mans and an outright win at the Daytona 24.
Currently offered on Hemmings Auctions, this 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe shows just how much the Viper matured in a little over a decade and a half. It also shows less than 6,100 miles on its odometer, making it a barely broken in example.

The genesis of the Viper started when Chrysler product chief—and all-around car guy—Bob Lutz tasked the Chrysler Design Center with developing a modern Cobra prototype. In January of 1989, the Viper concept dropped at the Detroit Auto Show. To say that the public’s reaction was positive would be a gross understatement.
Lutz promised a production car within three years and Chrysler managed to produce almost 300 Vipers RT/10 roadsters for 1992. The Viper was among the most powerful sports cars at the time, a description it held for the duration of its production. Its all-aluminum V10 was nominally based on the LA V10 cast-iron engine that was then in development alongside Dodge’s forthcoming heavy-duty trucks that were set to debut in 1994. With some help from Lamborghini (then owned by Chrysler), the Viper’s 8.0-liter/488-cu.in. engine was rated at 400 horsepower. But that was only the beginning for the massive engine and the snakebit sports car.

Dodge never sat still with the Viper. For 1996, the GTS Coupe arrived as the first step in refine. Gone were the side pipes, but engineering revisions ensured a 450-hp output figure for the 8.0-liter V10. Airbags, actual windows and A/C all debuted with the GTS. The RT/10 got power windows and the 450 horses a year later.
Fresh bodywork arrived in 2003 for the roadster, then the coupe in 2006. Output in this third-gen Viper was up to 510 horsepower out of an enlarged 8.3-liter V10. The next big boost in power came with the debut of the fourth-gen Viper in 2008, where an even larger displacement 8.4-liter V10 carried a 600 horsepower rating along with an equally impressive 560 lb-ft of torque. A final iteration introduced for 2013 was rated at 640 horsepower. No matter how you look at it, for each generation, the Viper could lay claim to having one of the most powerful normally aspirated production car engines under its long, sinuous hood.

For development of that fourth-gen V10, like the one in our auction car, Chrysler turned to McLaren and Riccardo in the U.K. While not a clean-sheet design, the all-aluminum engine featured a 1 mm larger bore along with an all-new block and cross-bolted main bearing caps for strength and durability. A cam-inside-a-cam was hydraulically activated for variable valve timing in the OHV engine. A new exhaust manifold and rerouted exhaust helped keep the cabin at a more reasonable temperature, mitigating a common complaint of previous Viper models.
With the significant increases in torque and power, Chrysler ditched the original-spec Tremec T56 six-speed manual for the beefier Tremec TR-6060 six-speed. Engineers also revised the rear end and gearing to maximize performance of the new powertrain. Other changes were made to the suspension as well, including the springs, shock valving and anti-roll bars.
Performance-wise, the fourth-gen Viper was a massive success, with quarter-mile times in the mid-11s at 125 mph or more. Top speed for the coupe was a legitimate supercar-grade 202 mph. Never sitting still, Chrysler’s engineers had developed a world-class supercar at a cut-rate supercar price.

The refined ’09 Viper Coupe featured that properly enclosed cabin with genuine power-operated windows, air conditioning, and a full-function infotainment system with 310 watts of power, seven speakers and an optional navigation system. Unfortunately for Dodge, even as the car itself was vastly improved over previous models, Viper sales continued to tumble, with just 660 cars sold in 2009, including 492 coupes. The 2010 model year was the “final” one for Viper, before the model’s brief return from 2013 to 2017.
This 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe is one 100 built as part of a limited run celebrating the 10th Viper Owners Invitational meet in Detroit. A plate on this vehicle indicates it as being number 78 out of the those 100 VOI cars. More importantly, this unmodified example shows less than 6,100 miles on the odometer. The Dodge Viper never had a particularly long options list, but the VOI10 edition included forged Sidewinder wheels, 18 inches in front and 19 in the rear; embroidered floor mats; the navigation-equipped infotainment system; and unique black fang stripes that run the length of the body from the hood to the rear end of the car.

According the seller, the first owner of this car was a former major league pitcher with three World Series titles to his name. The seller indicates no rain, no harsher weather and no rust, the latter of which appears to be confirmed by the provided photos. Even the meaty Michelin Pilot Sport tires are the originals installed at the factory.
The Viper has few rivals on the road, its character and in-your-face attitude unique among modern American cars. So, what word would you use to describe this 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe? Check it out now on Hemmings Auctions.
