After nearly two-decades in storage, a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 with just 977 original miles on the odometer has been unveiled. CBS-58 reports on this Wisconsin barn find, which presents as a time machine back to the ‘80s with much of the car appearing to be in like-new condition.
When Michael McElhattan, owner of DeLorean Midwest in Crystal Lake, Illinois, received a tip that pointed him to the DeLorean’s location, he wasted no time and made the quick trek to Wisconsin with his social media coordinator where they found the car in a barn, untouched for decades and layered in dust. “It happened pretty quick, because once I found out the car was close and it was a low-mileage car, I was excited to go take a look,” he told new reporters.
When they arrived at the barn in which the DeLorean was stored and opened the car door, the first thing they saw was a mouse scurrying across the center console. Despite the rodent trouble, the barn find DeLorean lacked sun damage that is commonly seen on aging classic cars. The leather seats, dash and instrument panel all look new, which coincides with the car’s extremely low mileage.
According to McElhattan, the DeLorean’s previous owner, instead of subjecting the car to wear and tear by driving it, would simply go into the barn to look at the car because he thought it was “really cool.”
Really cool, indeed. Only around 8,600 DeLorean DMC-12s were built between 1981 and 1983. Today, about 6,500 DeLorean motor cars are believed to still exist, and this barn find DeLorean has potential to become one of the cleanest, low-mileage examples in existence. The average sale price of DeLorean DMC-12 models over the past five years has grown to around $56,643. The most expensive, extremely original DeLorean so far was sold by RM Sotheby’s in late-January 2022 with just 174 miles on the clock. McElhattan plans to bring this example back (to the future…) to showroom condition.
