We’re only four games into the preseason, but it seems Milwaukee Bucks fans are figuring out what UConn men’s basketball fans have known for a while: Andre Jackson Jr. is pretty good.
Who would have thought the captain of one of the most dominant national championship teams in years can play, huh?
Jackson has wowed fans with his high-energy, highlight-producing game, raising eyebrows of Wisconsinites who are typically subjected to watching Marquette. His contagious effort on defense, savant-level basketball IQ and freakish athleticism have Bucks fans excited, and they’re learning that his intangible impact on the game, something UConn head coach Dan Hurley raved about last season, goes even further than what shows up on the stat sheet.
The stat sheet has been impressive too, though, as he’s filled up all kinds of columns, just like he did in college. In the Bucks’ preseason game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, the former Huskies star racked up 12 points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds in 20 minutes of action.

By Tuesday night, Bucks fans had seen enough– professing their love for the 6-foot-6 wing who was taken in the second round of the draft in June, 36th overall.
“I’m literally in love with Andre Jackson Jr. This dude is just terrorizing the ball handler every play,” wrote one fan, Ryan Holand, on X. “Give him real minutes.”

“So glad that Bucks fans are already falling in love with Andre Jackson,” Sam Vecenie, senior NBA writer for The Athletic, wrote. “Was my favorite player in college hoops last year, and just love his game so much. One of the best basketball processors in his class at real, dynamic speed.”

For their part, UConn fans were making a pastime of enjoying watching their NBA counterparts fall in love with their guy.
“Watching NBA fans uncover the secrets of Andre Jackson is like watching other people become enlightened and you’ve already memorized everything by Voltaire,” wrote one fan with the account name Cowboy Adama. (Assuming he considers Adama Sanogo’s work to be along the lines of Sir Francis Bacon).

You might be thinking, OK, well Bucks fans like him, that’s great– but it doesn’t mean anything unless the coach does, too.
Well, Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin (incidentally the father of UConn women’s basketball star Aubrey) does, in fact, seem to like Jackson.
“I think he’s going to be a special player before it’s all over,” Griffin told reporters after Jackson’s first preseason game against the Bulls on Oct. 8.
“He plays within himself,” Griffin said. “If he’s open, he’ll shoot it. If not, he doesn’t try to force shots. He protects the rim, protects the whole board. He just loves defense. It’s hard to find guys that love defense the way he does. With his athleticism, he just finds a way to impact the game.
“That’s all you have to do. Especially with this roster, you just find ways to impact the game. I thought he did that.”
Time will tell how many minutes Jackson will get with this Bucks team, which is in championship-or-bust mode after acquiring Damian Lillard to pair with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. But his game could perfectly fit Milwaukee’s needs, which will be to do all of the little things, the things Jackson excels at, and leave the scoring and playmaking to Giannis and Dame.
The Bucks have one last preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Oct. 20 before opening the regular season against the Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 26.
