The Cybertruck, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, should begin arriving to customers on November 30th of this year, but that’s just the first batch. Musk says the Cybertruck will continue to trickle out until 2025, while other sources are guessing that Cybertruck production delays could be bumped out to 2026 and beyond.
It’s been approximately four years since the Tesla Cybertruck was first announced. The first production Cybertruck was announced earlier this year, and several Cybertrucks have been spotted on the road during testing. A Cybertruck build slot even sold for $400,000 at a charity auction. Even so Musk told investors not to expect high production volumes, low prices, or profits anytime soon.
“We dug our own grave with Cybertruck,” Musk told analysts, referring to how complex the vehicle is to build. Although he has driven the Cybertruck and boasts that “it is an amazing product,” he also says there will be “enormous challenges in reaching volume production with the Cybertruck and in making the Cybertruck cash-flow positive.”
The Texas plant reportedly could produce up to 125,000 Cybertrucks a year, but Musk claims one-million people have reserved one. Because of how difficult the Cybertruck is to build, the plant can’t keep up with the demand. The build difficultly may or may not have to do with the fit and finish of the Cybertruck’s expansive stainless-steel bodywork.
Musk mentioned that making the prototypes is easy, but assembling the production version is “10,000 percent harder,” because the Cybertruck is so “radical” and “special.”
“I think it is our best product ever,” he boasted.
Tesla
The Cybertruck is also “insanely difficult to make it at a price people can afford,” according to Musk. Final pricing still hasn’t been announced since the company backed out of its $40,000 starting price last year.
The CEO still believes Tesla will work its way up to building 250,000 examples a year, but we reportedly won’t see that quickened production rate until 2025, at the earliest.
