While the Indian road network continues to expand, most of the new highways and expressways are constructed through sparsely populated areas. As we have observed in the past, encounters with stray animals are not uncommon and can lead to accidents. Here’s an incident from the newly inaugurated Delhi-Mumbai Expressway that illustrates how a wild animal collided with a speeding car.
The video was captured on the dashboard camera of a Tata Altroz. It depicts the Tata Altroz traveling in the right-most lane of the 12-lane expressway at a high speed. It appears that the car’s driver was maintaining a speed of 120 km/h, which is the legal speed limit on this expressway.

Suddenly, a Nilgai or Blue Buck appears from the right-hand side of the road and collides with the Altroz. The impact caused the Altroz to lose control and swerve, but the driver quickly regained control and resumed driving.
The vehicle’s owner, who shared the video, mentions that he did not stop on the highway out of fear that locals might react unreasonably and question him. He also shows the results of the impact later in the video.
The heavy Nilgai caused substantial damage to the Tata Altroz. Starting from the fender, both of the car’s doors sustained significant damage due to the collision. However, the driver, who was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident, emerged without any injuries. The owner stopped the car and called the highway patrol, who then towed the vehicle to the service station.
Altroz became the safest car in India
Shortly after its launch, it secured the prestigious five-star rating from Global NCAP, achieving the highest score ever recorded by a car manufactured in India. However, the Mahindra XUV300 quickly surpassed the Altroz in becoming India’s safest car, attaining even higher scores. While the Altroz still maintains its five-star rating, it has now been surpassed by other cars in terms of safety. Additionally, the Altroz was tested according to older protocols, which have since been upgraded.
Stray animals are a significant concern on many Indian highways, including wild animals, stray dogs, and cattle, and there have been limited measures taken to remove them from the roads. Several years ago, officials in Uttar Pradesh affixed highly reflective tape to the horns of stray cattle to enhance their visibility at night. However, no significant steps have been taken to address these road hazards thus far.
It is always advisable to exercise defensive driving on Indian roads and ensure that the road ahead is clear before attempting to overtake. Numerous past incidents have demonstrated that reckless overtaking can lead to serious accidents, especially on the unpredictable roads of India.
