This De Tomaso P72 prototype was put to the test on the track. Now the video is online for all to get a glimpse of what the P72 is like from the driver’s point of view, plus hear the high-revving V12 engine in all its glory.
There’s a slight catch: The difference between this P72 prototype and the production version is in the extra cylinders. The production version will reportedly be powered by a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 capable of around 700 horsepower and 608 pound-feet of torque, but that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the prototype’s ear-tickling exhaust notes.
As shown in the photos, the P72’s curvy exterior takes styling cues from the De Tomaso’s classic models, like the Pantera and Mangusta. The body is built over a carbon-fiber chassis from the Apollo Intensa Emozione. The interior of the P72 appears to be top-quality and decorated with polished metal and leather. Each of the instruments is highlighted by a shining, circular surround. Only 72 examples of the De Tomaso P72 will be produced. The automaker set the starting price at $794,000 (€750,000).
The company is also working on an even more powerful model, the P900, which can be equipped with a V12 or V10 engine. Just 18 examples will be made at $3 million each.
