Decision time: As UConn waits in hope, Cooper Flagg wraps up visit to Duke

Cooper Flagg, the nation’s top overall basketball recruit in the Class of 2024, is now done visiting colleges. All that appears left now is his decision: UConn or Duke.

Flagg’s official Duke visit – he had already visited unofficially in August – began Friday with the Blue Devils’ “Countdown to Craziness” event, similar to UConn’s First Night. Videos from the night are circulating online, one of which shows Flagg sitting in the student section with Blue Devils’ second-year head coach Jon Scheyer and a handful of other recruits, including five-star center Patrick Ngongba, who made an official visit to UConn during First Night.

The multiskilled 6-foot-8 forward originally from Newport, Maine, visited UConn in September, when he was led around campus by close family friend Donovan Clingan. As part of the visit, UConn set up a photoshoot with Flagg and Clingan wearing their mothers’ college jerseys from when they played basketball together at UMaine. Flagg was also seen at Rentschler Field for the UConn football game against Duke on Sept. 23.

“It was great. I had a really good time out there,” Flagg told 247Sports’ Travis Branham of his UConn visit, prior to visiting Duke. “I got to see the coaching-style through practice and stuff. I had a really good time, I got to hang out with the players a lot. All around it was a great time.

“Their pitch to me is that it’s just a winning school and a winning culture. No matter how good they may think I am or how good people think I am, Coach (Dan) Hurley is going to push me no matter what and help me get to the next level.”

Flagg, who is in his final year at high school basketball powerhouse Montverde Academy in Florida, called Duke his “dream school” in January, but UConn since jumped on and invested heavily in his recruitment to close the gap.

“Sources close to Flagg have been very protective when it comes to information about his timeline and the ‘reveal,’ so all that is known at this point is that Flagg should be deciding in time for the early signing period, which begins on Nov. 8,” 247Sports’ Eric Bossi wrote.

“Unless he’s unbelievably confused, I’m pretty sure he’s going to make a decision very quickly after he visits Duke,” Flagg’s mother, Kelly, told The Messenger. “That way, he can put it behind him and focus on what he needs to do to get better.”
