UConn guard Tristen Newton was one of 20 players named to the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award, presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame. The award annually recognizes the top point guard in college basketball.
Starting in 38 of the Huskies’ 39 games after transferring from East Carolina last year, Newton averaged 10.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-high 4.7 assists per game. Helping guide the program to its fifth national championship, he had 9.5 points, 5.2 assists and 5.8 rebounds over the six NCAA Tournament and led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the title game against San Diego State.
Newton also became the first player in UConn basketball history, men’s or women’s, to record multiple triple-doubles in the same season – both came in the XL Center, the first against Buffalo in his third-ever game as a Husky and the second against conference champion Marquette on Feb. 7.
According to a team release, Newton enters his final season of eligibility with 1,410 career points – 392 of which came as a Husky. In his lone season at UConn, he shot a career-best 36.6% from three-point range (38.9% in the tournament) and made 81.6% from the free throw line, where he’s never shot below 80% in a season.
Only two Huskies have ever received the Cousy Award: Kemba Walker in 2011 and Shabazz Napier in 2014. Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell won the award last season.
The rest of the Naismith Starting Five watch lists will be announced throughout the week. Additional awards include the Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward) and the Kareem-Abdul Jabbar Award (Center).
