Stephon Castle has yet to play in a college game yet, but he’s already earning national recognition. The UConn men’s basketball freshman was named to the preseason watch list for the Jerry West Award, which goes to the top shooting guard in men’s college basketball.
Twenty players were named to the watch list, which was announced Tuesday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Only one other player — Baylor’s Ja’Kobe Walter — is entering his freshman season.

The award will be chosen by Jerry West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee and presented on a date to be determined following the season. Last year’s winner was Marcus Sasser of Houston.
The Jerry West Award is part of the Naismith Starting Five, which also includes the Bob Cousy Award (point guard), Julius Erving Award (small forward), Karl Malone Award (power forward) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. UConn’s Tristen Newton was named to the watch list for the Cousy Award on Monday.
Castle, a 6-6, 215-pound guard out of Covington, Ga., was a five-star recruit and ranked the No. 9 prospect in the Class of 2023 by 247Sports. The former Newton High School star was a McDonald’s All-American, and averaged 20.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in high school last season.
