Alongside any number of electrified concepts, Toyota unveiled the Toyota FT-Se at the Japan Mobility Show. Described by the company said is a “high-performance sports BEV [battery electric vehicle] model proposed as one of the options for sports cars in the carbon-neutral era”, you could say it’s a preview of a new Toyota MR-2.
As we reported last week, an unconfirmed Japanese report states that Toyota plans to revive the MR2 in 2026 as the last sports car the company produces with a gasoline engine before concentrating on electric vehicles. The appearance of the Toyota FT-Se concept lends the report credibility.

As reported in Japan’s Best Car magazine, power would come from the GR Corolla’s 300-horsepower 1.6.-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission with GR-4 all-wheel drive system and Torsen limited-slip differentials front and rear. The same powertrain would see duty in the next Toyota GR86 sports coupe.
Toyota endowed the unveiled the Toyota FT-Se with a digital cockpit and a low instrument panel to provide good visibility, while kneepads are fitted to protect the body from G-forces during driving.
While some reports suggest that any future MR2 would be built solely for the Japanese market, images of its left-hand-drive instrument panel suggests otherwise.
