While the all-new, heavily updated versions of Nexon, Harrier and Safari are creating headlines for Tata Motors, the Altroz hatchback might appear to be on the backfoot for many people. However, that’s not the case, for Tata Motors is planning to introduce a big update for the premium hatchback.
The Tata Altroz Racer hot hatch concept, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, is looking to turn into reality, for the production version of the same has been spied on test for the first time.

A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Tata Altroz Racer has been spied out in the open near Tata’s production facility in Pune. The test mule spied had its bonnet open for some general checkup, which revealed that the engine cover has “Racer” written over it by hand. It denotes that the test mule is actually of the Tata Altroz Racer, which was introduced at the Auto Expo 2023 as a more powerful and premium version of the already-on-sale Tata Altroz hatchback.

The Tata Altroz Racer hatchback, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, looks exactly like the standard version of the Altroz, though its front bonnet is finished in a contrasting black shade.

Even the rearview mirrors, roof, front grille, 16-inch alloy wheels and rear boot lid garnish feature a gloss black theme for a sportier approach.

The cabin of the Tata Altroz Racer hatchback is spruced up with a new upholstery and trim garnish with a dual-tone black and red theme.

A few new features were introduced in the Altroz Racer, which at the moment, are not offered in the standard Altroz, such as a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a full-TFT instrument console, six airbags, wireless charger, ventilated front seats and air purifier.

It was also showcased with a single-pane sunroof, which was added to the standard Altroz a few months ago, as a part of periodic variant updates.

Much more powerful

The big change in the Tata Altroz Racer, as compared to the standard Altroz, lies under the hood, with the former having a more powerful iteration of the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Here in the Altroz Racer, the engine is in the turbocharged state of tune, which already powers the petrol variants of Nexon. Showcased with a 6-speed manual transmission, the engine in the Tata Altroz Racer was claimed to deliver 120 PS of power and 170 Nm of torque.

With these claims and features list, the Tata Altroz Racer aims directly at the Hyundai i20 N-Line which is currently the only budget hot hatchback available in India.
