As a teener of the early 1950s, Jerry Anolik must’ve watched too many science fiction flicks about rockets to the moon. What form such magical machines would take was anybody’s guess. This unique vision evolved from damage inflicted upon Jerry’s Cad-powered 1955 T-Bird by a freeway sideswiper. He banked the insurance money and rebuilt the body himself, sculpting hot lead into a car-show favorite that was driven to events from coast to coast—GMC supercharger and all. Enroute home to San Francisco in 1960, Jerry noticed the Bonneville Speed Trials in progress, borrowed racing rubber from Firestone’s crew, and shockingly clocked 161 mph to qualify for a class record. Alas, an engine fire on the return run burned off the beak and sent the ’bird underground for half a century, until this resurrection. (Jerry sold it and died soon after—but not before assisting in early stages of his beloved Moon Rocket’s full, running restoration by current-caretaker Joe Hickenbottom.)
