In South India, many states are still experiencing heavy rains, and this has affected people’s lives in various ways. It is not just people who are affected, but animals as well. We have seen several reports where animals emerge from the jungle in search of food or higher ground to escape the floodwaters. In most cases, these animals are captured by forest department officers and subsequently released back into the wild. One of the most common types of news during rainy seasons is related to snakes finding their way into cars. Here, we have one such report from Kerala, where a King Cobra was rescued from under the bonnet of a Mahindra XUV500.
The video has been shared by Kerala Kaumudi on their YouTube channel. The incident occurred in the Soornadu region of Kollam district. The owner of the XUV500 was returning from Gavi, a hill station and tourist destination in Pathanamthitta district. While on the way back from Gavi, the SUV owner spotted a snake crossing the road. The driver immediately applied the brakes to avoid running over it. The owner stopped the car in time.

He even checked to ensure that the snake had safely crossed the road. After confirming that the snake was not under the car, he continued his journey. On the return trip, they took a short break, and when they stopped near a shop, a street dog started barking at the car. The owner became suspicious and drove the car to the forest department office. Even the officials inspected the car but couldn’t find any snake. He then drove the car back home.
Upon parking the car, the owner noticed that his own dog began to behave strangely. The dog was sniffing under the bonnet and barking at it. The owner grew concerned and immediately contacted a well-known snake rescuer known as Vava Suresh. He consulted with Suresh over the phone, and after viewing the visuals, Suresh was certain that there was a snake in the car. He promptly arrived at the scene and started inspecting the vehicle.
He opened the bonnet and searched for the snake. However, much like the forest department officers, he couldn’t spot it. After an initial unsuccessful attempt, Suresh asked the owner if he could seek the assistance of his dog in locating the snake. The dog was released, and it immediately ran to the car, sniffing under the engine cover. The rescuer knew that this is where the snake was. He carefully removed the cover and found the snake, which turned out to be a King Cobra. This is an extremely venomous snake, and the owner was indeed fortunate that it hadn’t ventured into the car’s cabin or escaped while parked at home. The snake was rescued by the snake handler and likely released back into the wild.
Reptiles, such as snakes, are cold-blooded animals that come out in search of warmth to regulate their body temperature when the environment becomes cold. The engine bay of a car may provide a dry and warm environment, making it an ideal place for snakes to seek shelter. This area is also quite dark, which snakes prefer. If you ever encounter such a situation, it is essential not to attempt to handle the snake yourself. Our knowledge about snakes is limited, and it is always best to have a professional handle them to avoid any issues.
