Spotted at the 2023 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, this Toyota Land Cruiser 70/80 Series pickup attracted crowds of JDM truck and off-road enthusiasts with its neo-vintage vibes. The build is a mashup conversion that utilized a damaged 1997 Land Cruiser FZJ80 chassis and a 2009 HZJ79 pickup body to create a handsome, durable off-road machine.
Built by RPM Off-Road Garage in Monrovia, California, the vintage-inspired Toyota truck was featured alongside the Frankenstein twin-engine Nissan 350Z outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The build is a mashup conversion that utilized a damaged 1997 Land Cruiser FZJ80 chassis and a 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ79 body to create a handsome, durable off-road machine. Steve Lam, the owner of RPM, selected the ‘97 Land Cruiser FZJ80 chassis for its off-road prowess and durability, notably made possible by its robust solid axles and coil sprung suspension. The frame was lengthened by 18-inches, and mounts were fabricated to attach the 2009 HZJ79 pickup body, which was sourced from the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum in Utah and sold as leftover parts imported from the Middle East after the truck was stripped to become an armored vehicle.
The pickup is powered by a Toyota 1FZ-FE 4.5-liter DOHC 24-valve inline-six engine, lubricated with ENEOS 5W-40 motor oil and paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Double carbon fiber front and rear driveshafts from Driveshaft Pro deliver the power to the front and rear axles. On-demand traction is provided by front and rear Eaton Performance electronic locking differentials, which when activated, engages all four 17 by 9-inch HDR forged beadlock wheels wrapped with 37×13.50 R17 Toyo Open Country M/T tires.
To tackle tough terrains, the FZJ80 chassis utilizes a three-link suspension built by RPM Off-Road Garage featuring six-inch lift springs, Ironman 4×4 foam cell Pro shock absorbers and a rear Panhard bars for stabilization.
Beyond the HZJ79 body adorned in ENEOS Motor Oil livery, the exterior is equipped with a Dissent Offroad front bumper carrying a Warn Industries recovery winch, Front Runner Outfitters bed and cab racks, Pelican storage boxes, an Ironman4x4 roof top tent with a 270-degree awning, a collapsible shower room, and a powered water tank. The truck can light up the night with its Baja Designs LP9 Pro front spot lamps, S8 roof light bar, S2 side lighting, rock light perimeter lighting, and S1 rear chase lighting, all managed via a Switch Pro SP9100 lighting control unit.
Best of all, the Toyota isn’t just a show truck. It was built for a purpose and will be used by Steve and the RPM team for off-road and overland expeditions.
