UConn men’s basketball players Tristen Newton and Donovan Clingan were named to the 2023-24 John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the team announced Tuesday.
The list is made up of 50 players who are deemed frontrunners for some of the most prestigious honors in college basketball, the Wooden Award All-American Team and the Most Outstanding Player award.
Clingan, the Huskies’ 7-foot-2 center, was also named to preseason watch lists for both the NABC Player of the Year, the Naismith Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award in addition to preseason All-America selections from The Almanac, CBS Sports and FOX Sports. Newton, who was the only player in college basketball with a pair of triple-doubles last season, was also named to the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award which goes to the top point guard in college basketball.
Last season, playing behind Final Four Most Outstanding Player Adama Sanogo, Clingan averaged 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 13.1 minutes per game. Working his way back from an offseason foot strain, the star sophomore is set to be one of the main leaders on and off the court for the UConn men. So far, in limited playing time through the team’s first two games, Clingan has averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 15.5 minutes.
Newton, 6-foot-5, averaged 10.1 points, 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game in his first season at UConn after transferring from East Carolina. Expected to take a step up this season, he has averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals through the Huskies’ first two games.
