Porsche Confirms its Electric 718 Sports Car Will Share Production Line with Gas-Powered 911

On Thursday November 3rd, Porsche announced that the 718 model will be produced on the same production line as the gasoline-powered 911, located at the automaker’s main plant in the Zuffenhausen area of Stuttgart, Germany.

The current I.C.E. 718 model is built at this location, as well as some that trickle through the Volkswagen Group plant in Osnabrück, Germany to make up for capacity limits at Porsche’s main plant. Porsche also mentioned it will be building the upcoming Macan model’s electric drive systems in Zuffenhausen, which will then be sent to Porsche’s plant in Leipzig, Germany for full vehicle assembly. The Zuffenhausen, Germany location also builds the current electric Porsche Taycan.

According to Porsche’s press release, the automaker will invest around $271 million in the Zuffenhausen plant in preparation for the electric 718’s production. Plans include expanding of the location, setting up new quality assurance stations, and implementing new production systems to improve efficiency. Porsche reported the recent introduction of automated gliders, allowing in-progress builds to be moved around the plant without needing the traditional production line, is advantageous for building vehicles with two different powertrain types on the same line. A new light tunnel has already been installed for vehicle inspections.

“60 years of the Porsche 911 and 75 years of Porsche sports cars: the double anniversary marks a special year for Porsche. The reconstruction measures and extensions to sports car production at our main plant are an important milestone for the Zuffenhausen site,” said Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG.

“The conversion measures will enable increased efficiency, the highest quality standards, and mixed production of combustion-engine and electric sports cars. This will see us start a new chapter in sports car production in terms of the smart factory.”

Porsche states that it will offer the current 718 alongside the electric version for a period of time, dependent on how the market moves forward. The same is to be expected for the Porsche Macan when the electric model arrives. The company says the Macan EV will enter production sometime in 2024, while the 718 EV is expected around 2025.

Porsche’s prototype electric 718 has been making waves on the internet as it’s spotted during testing by several sources. The overall design appears to be similar to the automaker’s 2021 Mission R concept car.
