Telefonica penned a multi-year agreement with the United Nation World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to deploy technologies including IoT and AI, in a bid to digitalise the global tourism sector and make the industry more competitive and sustainable.
The operator stated the collaboration will run until 2026 and is aimed at utilising technologies including big data, cybersecurity, cloud, AI and IoT to connect SMEs to their regional tourism sector, claiming these tools will also aid businesses in scaling their performance.
As the pair’s initial project, Telefonica’s investment arm Wayra Hispam is expected to help connect “the entrepreneurial ecosystem around the world” and collaborate in the development of Colombia’s tourism sector.
There are also plans to encourage digital training for enterprises through Telefonica’s existing programme with UNWTO, “so that employees can develop and take advantage of the full potential that digitalisation brings to an industry that is so relevant to the economy of many countries”.
This, the operator believes, will assist in the “economic recovery” of the tourism industry.
