10 Standout Corvettes from the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals

Though it is a challenge because, as usual, the quality, variety and quantity of cars at MCACN is fantastic, we chose ten Corvettes that stood out from the crowd. Here are our top ten picks.

1954 Corvette in Pennant Blue

1954 Corvette in Pennant Blue

The second year of production for Corvette, 1954 was challenging indeed. At the end of 1953 a permanent, properly outfitted production line in Chevrolet’s sprawling St. Louis Assembly plant replaced the small, temporary line hastily set up in Flint to put together approximately 300 Corvettes in 1953 and the company’s product planners expected to sell 12,000 of the newly minted sports car in ’54. Quality control problems, lack of basic amenities including roll-up side windows and exterior door handles, and high cost were among the reasons why buyer demand trailed off sharply and by the end of 1954 one-third of the 3,640 Corvettes made remained unsold. Thankfully, the car had enough support within GM’s management ranks to get past the shortcomings and resultant sales slump and today 1954s are relatively plentiful (at least compared to 1953s and ‘55s), giving enthusiasts the opportunity to own early six-cylinder Corvettes. This stunning example is finished in Pennant Blue, one of several colors introduced in 1954. Only a small number of ‘54s left the St. Louis factory painted Pennant Blue and, in concert with beige convertible tops and interior trim, and red wheels, they look magnificent.

1963 Split Window Riverside Red with Rochester Fuel Injection

No top ten Corvette list would be complete without a 1963. The split window coupe was a landmark design when introduced and its stature among car enthusiasts from all segments of the hobby has continually expanded since. This beautiful Riverside Red is equipped with Rochester Product’s legendary fuel-injection system. In 1963 2,610 Corvettes were built with the fuel-injected 327/360 horsepower engine, a $430.40 option.

1965 Corvette Nassau Blue with First-Year 396ci Big Block

Chevrolet’s Mark IV family of big block engines fundamentally altered the entire performance automotive landscape starting in 1965, when it was offered at a displacement of 396 cubic inches. Corvette-spec 396 engines made the most of forged internals, 11.0:1 compression, a stout solid lifter cam, and free-breathing cylinder heads to deliver 425 horsepower, and it did this at a very reasonable price of $286.45. A total of 2,157 1965 Corvettes were built with the 396 option and the ones that survive to this day, such as this gorgeous Nassau Blue/blue interior convertible are highly sought after.

1969 Corvette in Riverside Gold with L89 Big Block 427

In 1967-69 the L89 engine option added aluminum cylinder heads to the 427/435 horsepower power plant. It added a whopping $832.05 to the MSRP, helping explain why only 390 examples were made in 1969. This one looks absolutely stunning in rarely seen Riverside Gold and the factory side exhaust, a 1969-only option, adds immensely to its collectability.

1967 L71 Corvette Pair

For many, 1967 Corvettes equipped with L71 427/435 horsepower engines are a high water mark. One fortunate individual owns this complimentary pair, which are particularly sinister looking in Tuxedo Black with a black interior and red hood stinger. Out of 22,940 Corvettes assembled in 1967, Chevrolet painted only 815 black. The convertible goes two steps further with aluminum wheels and side exhaust, two extremely desirable options offered in 1967.

1962 Corvette Restomod

Though stock cars are the norm at MCACN some stunning customs always round out the selection on display. This 1962, resplendent in Spies Hecker’s Sebring Orange Metallic Tri-coat, is powered by an LS3 bolted up to a Tremec TKO500 5-speed gearbox. C6 Corvette front and four-link Fox rear suspension systems mated to a Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis give the car updated handling while Wilwood six-piston front and four-piston rear calibers help bring it to a stop.

1982 Corvette Collector Edition

1982 Chevrolet Corvette Collector Edition

The third generation Corvette endured a record-setting fifteen years. Though it was outdated in just about every measure as the end approached, Chevrolet brought C3 to a conclusion in high style with the 1982 Collector Edition. This special model included silver beige paint with gradated bronze accents on both sides and the hood. The exterior was further distinguished by bespoke aluminum wheels, cloisonné emblems, bronze-tinted glass T-tops, and a function rear glass hatch. The exterior’s silver-beige color scheme carried into the interior as well, for the special leather seat upholstery, door panels, leather steering wheel wrap, and horn button cover. The ’82 Collector Edition listed for $22,537.59, making it the first regular production Corvette to top $20,000.

Barnfind 1959 Corvette

Sometimes the beauty is in the story, not the car itself. This 1959 Corvette is one of 37 cars in the “Barn Find” display. It was bought new by World War II veteran Jack Alberti from Don Allen Chevrolet in Manhattan and today belongs to his nieces. It has obviously suffered some hard knocks, including vandalism and the theft of its hardtop and hubcaps while parked outside the owner’s house in Bensonhurst Brooklyn. Despite it’s rough appearance and damage, the car has gone a total of only 59,377 miles and is extremely original. The two sisters who own it cherish their memories of riding in the car as children and listening to their Uncle Jack and his buddies talk about Corvettes and other sports cars of the era.

1967 Corvette 427 in Elkhart Blue

1967 Corvette 427 in Elkhart Blue

Chevrolet offered three different blues for Corvette in 1967 and this car is Elkhart Blue, which is a stunning color that is very rarely seen. Adding to this particular car’s appeal is its gorgeous teal blue interior and matching teal blue hood stripe. Of course, the striped hood indicates that this car is equipped with an optional 427 engine, in this case the 390 horsepower version. The color combination in a 427 car that’s well documented with an original window sticker and order copy, among other things, makes this car very desirable indeed!

1963 Corvette Convertible

Though 1963 split window coupes get almost all of the attention, ’63 convertibles also deserve our love, especially a car such as this one. It’s a red exterior/red interior fuelie with two tops and a documented history back to day one. The original owner, Roger E. Miller, was just 16 years old when he bought it so it had to be initially titled in his mother’s name. When Roger celebrated his 21st birthday the title was transferred to him. Some sixty years later the car is now in the hands of its fourth owner. It has travelled only 37,246 miles, and has been recognized this year with an NCRS Top Flight award and a Bloomington Gold Certificate.
