Hemmings Marketplace Weekly Round Up: Three Chevrolets, Two Fords and a Porsche

We take a look at the sale of a no-reserve, fuel-injected 1957 Chevrolet Corvette, a full-size 1964 Impala SS Convertible, and a nearly new, ultra low mileage 1978 Camaro Z28. Other cars that get the in-depth analysis are a highly customized 1962 Ford F-Series pickup built on a modern Crown Victoria chassis and running gear, a timeless ’56 Ford Fairlane Sunliner Convertible, and a 1995 Porsche 968 Coupe that was all about balance and making the most out of its 3.0-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine. On Hemmings Auctions, a total of 75 lots (including vehicles and automobilia) reached the final bid from November 12 through November 18. Our registered buyers purchased 49 of these lots in total via Hemmings Auctions and post-auction Make Offer listings, for a net 65% sell-through rate. An additional 22 cars were sold via direct Make Offer listings.

There are reasons why the full-size Chevrolets were among the best-selling cars for the duration of the 1960s. They had a well-deserved reputation for quality and were made in enough variations to please seemingly anyone. While the SS trim was optional in previous years, for 1964 Impala Super Sport became its own line. This 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible had been restored sometime in the past decade and refinished in its original Danube Blue. The seller believed the 300-hp 327-cu.in. V8 to be original to the car. Given the car’s strong performance with its net sale price at 97% of the high-end of the market range, it’s clear that interest remains strong in these full-size American automobiles.

Recent Market Range: $31,000-$45,000

Proving that the unmistakable style of mid-Fifties American cars seems to never really go out of style, this 1956 Ford Fairlane Sunliner Convertible sold for an impressive 48% over the reserve, and a solid 21% over the estimated high end of the market range. While not particularly rare with 58,147 examples reportedly made by Ford that year, this Sunliner was restored and looked sharp in its Mandarin Orange over Colonial White two-tone finish. The same color combo existed inside in what appeared to be reupholstered vinyl seating surfaces. The Thunderbird Special 312-cu.in. V8 in this seemingly high-quality driver was also reportedly rebuilt. Overall, it was a strong sale.

The calendar tells us that Chevrolet stopped making 1978 Camaro Z28’s about 45 years ago. Until this 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was submitted, we didn’t know that an essentially brand new one was still available. Showing just 1,095 miles on its odometer at the time of submission, this Z28 had only the most minor of imperfections to go along with its nearly entirely original paint, unblemished black vinyl interior, gold YJ8 aluminum alloy “turbine” wheels and even its Firestone radial tires. The pre-auction research indicated the car could reach as high as $42,000 and the final net selling price went a hair over that amount, showing the continuing draw of highly original, low-mileage muscle cars.

Porsche’s update to the successful 944 featured enough changes to be given an all-new moniker: 968. Following its predecessor’s playbook, the 968 was powered by a large four-cylinder engine mounted almost entirely behind the front axle and drove the rear wheels via a rear-mounted transaxle for optimum weight distribution. Overall production was far lower than that of the long-lived 944, with less than 4,500 imported to the U.S., approximately half the fixed-roof Coupe. This Guards Red 1995 Porsche 968 Coupe showed less than 74,000 miles at the time of submission and was equipped with the desirable six-speed manual. Not meeting reserve at auction, it sold a few weeks later as a Make Offer listing.

Want to garner a ton of views and strong bids for your collector car at auction? Easy, just have a desirable version of an already coveted model and offer it at no reserve. With over 26,000 views and nearly 500 watchers, it took 43 bids, including 11 that extended the auction past the scheduled end time, for this fuel-injected 1957 Chevrolet Corvette managed to land just above the mid-point in the recent market range. While not perfect, this Venetian Red C1 could probably be best described as a “quality driver,” with some minor blemishes in the finish, some minor surface rust on the frame, and some “wear and tear” on the red vinyl. The seller did note that the Rochester fuel-injection system had recently been rebuilt.

When it comes to highly personalized restomods, it can often be hard to tell the performance of that auction against the going market rate. However, we’ll go out on a limb when looking at the results of this 1962 Ford F100 pickup restomod listing due to the 17,000+ views and the 41 total bids on this no-reserve lot. The winning bidder ultimately paid $61,950 for this truly unique F-Series pickup, which was built on a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria frame and included lots of Crown Vic components, including the powertrain, suspension and more. Other custom touches included the raised cherry wood and epoxy bed, red leather upholstery with black piping, and a very stylized refinish that included simulated patina throughout the surface.
