Conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar has been in jail in Delhi for years now. He was accused of committing a fraud of Rs 200 crore from businessmen. Sukesh had actually extorted money from the wives of former promoters of Ranbaxy and had promised secure bail to the company’s promoters. Sukesh Chandrasekhar and his wife, Leena Maria Paul, who was an actress, led a lavish life with this money, amassing a huge collection of exotic and expensive cars. These cars were actually seized by the ED and other government agencies, and now, as many as 12 vehicles from this collection are being auctioned to recover Income Tax dues.
The vehicles being auctioned were seized by the Income Tax department from various places. The auction will take place on November 28 in Bengaluru, aimed at recovering the dues Sukesh owes to the Income Tax Department. The vehicles being auctioned this time include cars like the BMW M5, Range Rover, Jaguar XKR Coupe, Toyota Innova Crysta, Nissan Teana, Toyota Fortuner, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Toyota Prado, and bikes like the Ducati Diavel. All these expensive and exotic cars are currently in the custody of the Income Tax Department.
The reserve price for the vehicles being sold at the auction ranges from Rs 2.03 lakh for the Nissan Teana to Rs 1.74 crore for the Rolls Royce. The vehicles to be put up for auction were seized in 2018 from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other parts of the country, all brought to Bengaluru. Income Tax Department officials told The Hindu that the auction was part of the recovery process initiated against Sukesh to recover a certificate of debt, dues of which amount to Rs 308.48 crore as of November 10, for the financial years 2012-13 to 2018-19.
The department recently opened the vehicles to check their condition and for a general inspection. People who became aware of it visited the office to check the condition of the cars. Many were prospective bidders, inquiring about the bidding and auction procedures. The department opened the cars on Wednesday and stated it would be open for 2 more days, expecting more people to attend.
This is not the first time Sukesh’s cars have been auctioned by a government agency. In August this year, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), also investigating money laundering and other cases against Sukesh, auctioned some cars. Interested bidders had the option to register online and bid via ED’s official website. Most of these vehicles were actually in Kochi under ED’s custody. ED had seized cars worth crores of rupees from Sukesh. The current auction by the Income Tax Department is different from the one conducted by ED earlier this year. Some of these cars were seized from Sukesh’s sea-facing bungalow. In the chargesheet that was actually filed in 2021, it was revealed that Sukesh utilised the money he extorted to buy expensive gifts to Bollywood actress Nora Fatehi.
In addition to committing frauds with the wives of former promoters of Ranbaxy, Sukesh is also accused of impersonating a Law Ministry official to cheat women. The Enforcement Department is investigating a case against him for money laundering.
