Living the mountain life can be as challenging as navigating the roads leading there. This footage from Uttarakhand vividly demonstrates how things can go awry. The video, captured by a bystander during a rescue operation, depicts a Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 being rescued by individuals, only to later tumble off the hill.
The footage shows several people attempting to pull the Maruti Alto 800 from the hillside using ropes and physical effort. Additional individuals are seen pushing the car from behind.
Initially successful in retrieving the vehicle from the hillside, the group encountered an unforeseen challenge. As the slope descended, the car gained momentum and unfortunately rolled off the cliff once again.
At the time of the incident, there was no one seated in the driver’s seat to apply the brakes and prevent the vehicle from rolling off. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, and thankfully, no other vehicles were present on the road that could have been involved in the accident.
The exact cause of the Alto 800’s initial fall remains uncertain. It is plausible that the driver struggled to negotiate a sharp turn, resulting in the car veering off the cliff. Despite the lack of injuries in this mishap, the outcome could have been significantly more severe.
This video imparts several crucial lessons. Firstly, it underscores the importance of executing such rescues cautiously. Ideally, someone should have been inside the vehicle to control it once it was back on the road. The unexpected acceleration due to the slope likely caught the rescuers off guard.
To prevent such accidents, preparations could have included placing rocks in front of the vehicle to halt its descent down the hill. In mountainous regions, it’s a common practice to place stones around the tires when parking on slopes precisely to prevent such incidents.
Driving in the mountains
Driving on mountain roads presents various challenges for road users. In cold conditions, the formation of black ice can be a significant risk, as it causes vehicles to slip. Black ice forms quickly on the road surface after sunset, appearing like a wet surface and making it difficult to spot. This type of ice is particularly dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds. It is crucial to slow down and exercise caution when encountering a potentially wet surface, especially after sunset.
Flash floods are another hazard to be aware of in mountainous areas, although they do not occur frequently. Many mountain roads also serve as drainage routes for higher-altitude locations, and exceptionally heavy rainfall can result in water flowing down onto the roads, posing a risk to vehicles. However, such incidents are rare.
While there are indeed dangers associated with driving in mountainous regions, taking precautionary measures can turn it into a memorable experience. Mountain driving requires heightened concentration, and one of the most important rules is to stay in your own lane. As most mountain roads are undivided, inexperienced drivers often tend to drift into the opposite lane, which can lead to severe accidents. Additionally, overtaking should be done with extreme caution, especially on blind corners, as improper overtaking maneuvers can result in serious accidents.
