UConn men’s basketball routs Manhattan, 90-60, on record-setting day in Hartford

HARTFORD – Tristen Newton became UConn’s all-time leader in triple-doubles when he registered his third in just two seasons as the fifth-ranked Huskies routed Manhattan, 90-60, at the XL Center on Friday.

Head coach Dan Hurley knew when Newton needed just one more rebound to complete the triple-double and yelled out to the court, “You better get a rebound soon.” It would’ve been a bad look, he said, to leave Newton in the game in its final minutes just for him to get the last rebound.

Newton heard him – “He’s very loud,” he said – and had some help from Donovan Clingan clearing the paint for him to collect his 10th rebound with 5:39 left in the game.

He checked out to a standing ovation seconds later and finished with 15 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds.

“Credit to my teammates,” Newton said humbly, as he did after the first and second time he accomplished the feat last season. “Without them making shots none of this is possible and without them boxing out, the bigs do a great job of boxing out and allowing me to just go in there and clean it up. It’s really just credit to them, it’s not possible without them.”

Newton came into the season tied with Shabazz Napier for the most triple-doubles in program history with two.

“He’s a big guard, I think he’s the best rebounding guard in the country. He’s a well-rounded guard offensively, he can make 3s, he can drive the ball, he’s a tremendous passer,” Hurley said. “This is a champion that’s averaging (15) points a game, triple-doubles, he should be talked about as one of the best college guards in the country.”

The double-digit win marks UConn’s 23rd straight against nonconference opponents, tying North Carolina (2008-10) for the NCAA’s all-time record.

“We had no idea (until after Monday’s game against Texas) but it felt like it was pretty special, the run we’ve been on,” Hurley said. “There’s so many things involved in how dominant we’ve been in the nonconference. Having Luke Murray and Kimani Young, two of the best coaches in the country that do an incredible job with the preparation. Having NBA-level players that are all about winning and don’t care if it’s them on any night, it’s just about UConn basketball.”

Cam Spencer made all four of his 3-point attempts to finish with a team-high 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field. Donovan Clingan scored 17 points in just 18 minutes and Alex Karaban had 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Hassan Diarra, once scoring seven consecutive points, finished with 11 off the bench.

“The game comes easy when you have teammates like we do,” Spencer said. “We share the ball very well so I just have to be ready to knock down shots.”

UConn, shooting 66% from the field in the first half and 56% from 3, built its lead to 39-22 before Hall of Famer Ray Allen was introduced at the under-four media timeout. The UConn legend received a standing ovation at center court before joining in on the t-shirt toss.

“If you look at the evolution of Danny (Hurley), he could always win a street fight. Now he can go in the library and beat the debate team,” said Manhattan head coach John Gallagher, the former University of Hartford head coach. “So the fact that he can go in the library and beat the debate team is why Connecticut will be a national champion contender for the foreseeable future.”

Up 49-32 at halftime , UConn started the second half with a 10-0 run thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Spencer and Newton. The first made 3-pointer of freshman Jaylin Stewart‘s career came on Newton’s 10th assist of the game, just in front of UConn’s bench. Stewart finished with a career-high seven points as nine different Huskies scored in the second half with freshmen Solo Ball and Jayden Ross got into the scoring column.

Former UHart coach John Gallagher ‘overwhelmed’ with memories as he returned to coach Manhattan against UConn

UConn finished the game shooting a season-high 58% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc, outscoring the Jaspers, 54-24, in the paint.

“I liked the shooting, I liked Donovan getting more touches today in the post, he’s a work in progress that way, as a guy we throw the ball in the post to and try to score one-on-one,” Hurley said. “We want to start trying to have that inside game, not just as a ball-screen roll guy, but as somebody we can throw it in (to) that will eventually command double-teams.”

UConn (6-0) has a chance to break the record with a double-digit win over New Hampshire on Monday.

“Obviously it’s in the back of our heads,” Clingan said. “We’re trying to go be a part of history and do something no team has done.”
