The Toyota Fortuner is, hands down, the most successful premium full-size ladder-on-frame SUV in India. Over the last 14 years, no other SUV in its segment has ever managed to dethrone this champion. The Fortuner comes available with two powertrains in India. The first is a 2.7-litre petrol engine, and the other is a 2.8-litre diesel engine option. Now, as no surprise to anyone, recently it was revealed that the diesel-engined Fortuner comprises 97 percent of the total sales, leaving the petrol-powered model with just a 3 percent share.

Now the bigger question that arises with this fact is why is the diesel Fortuner so popular in India. Why is it that Toyota, since January of this year, has sold 29,268 units of the Fortuner diesel and very few of the petrol-powered Fortuners? Now, if you also have this same question in mind, then you have come to the right place. Following are the reasons why the Toyota Fortuner diesel has outsold its petrol-powered counterpart.
Better mileage with a diesel engine
India, as we all know, is a mileage-obsessed country, and even with a fuel guzzler, people tend to go towards the one that offers better mileage. In the case of the Toyota Fortuner, the diesel is the preferred choice of buyers because the diesel Fortuner mileage with a manual transmission is around 14.6 kmpl, while with an automatic transmission, the same diesel engine provides 14.2 kmpl. On the other hand, the petrol manual Fortuner offers 10 kmpl, and the automatic petrol variant provides 10.3 kmpl.

Diesel: Better drivability on highways
Most of the Toyota Fortuner buyers buy it for the comfort of driving on long stretches of highways. Now, with this use case, the Fortuner diesel comes out on top of the petrol model because it offers much better in-gear acceleration on highways while overtaking. The torque-rich nature of the diesel motor is what most of the Indian Fortuner buyers prefer over the outright smoothness and refinement of the petrol engine.
Better resale
Another one of the biggest reasons for the Fortuner diesel’s success over its petrol counterpart is the resale value. In the used car market, no matter what age a Toyota Fortuner is, it commands a hefty price tag. However, it’s only when the variant is a diesel-engined one. There are not a lot of people who buy new petrol Fortuners, and there are even fewer people who look for a petrol Fortuner; hence, most buyers go for the safer and easier-to-sell diesel model.
Diesel: Available with 4X4

Although not a lot of people go for the Toyota Fortuner with 4X4, those who do want this feature can only get it with the diesel variant. The Fortuner petrol only comes with an option between a manual and an automatic transmission. There is no 4X4 on offer by the Indo-Japanese automaker for the petrol variants of the Toyota Fortuner.
Diesel Fortuner offers a lot more torque

A lot of people who buy the Toyota Fortuner buy it for its feeling of power. This feeling is mostly provided by the high torque of the diesel engine option. The 2.8-litre diesel engine offers a power of 204 bhp and a massive torque of 500 Nm. In comparison, the petrol-powered Toyota Fortuner only offers a power of 166 bhp and half the torque at 245 Nm. For this reason as well, a lot of people like to go for the Fortuner diesel.
