Acura continues its momentum in enhancing the driving experience of its models with the expansion of its Type S lineup. The Type S lineup was resurrected with the arrival of the TLX Type S, which was followed by MDX Type S, marking the first application of the Type S badge to an Acura SUV, and most recently the Integra Type S.
Unlike the more aggressive counterparts like BMW’s M series or Mercedes-AMG models, Acura’s Type S editions offer a touch more sportiness under the hood without compromising on comfort.
Let’s delve into the mechanical modifications. While the standard MDX boasts a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, upgrading to the Type S variant brings a thrilling turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. This engine, shared with the TLX Type S, produces 355 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 354 pound-feet of torque at an impressively low 1,400 rpm.

The abundance of low-end torque makes accelerating from standstill effortless and passing on the highway seamless. Moreover, the V6 engine feels notably more refined compared to the MDX’s standard offering. The only thing we wished was part of the package is a more meaty sounding exhaust note. Even in the sportiest Sport+ drive mode the soundtrack from the engine and exhaust is quite tame.
This turbocharged V6 is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, purportedly delivering 40% quicker downshifts and 30% quicker upshifts. However, the transmission might occasionally delay in finding the ideal gear, despite the enhancements.
Expectedly, the MDX Type S exhibits slightly reduced fuel efficiency compared to the standard version, with ratings of 17 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
One significant advantage of opting for the MDX Type S is the inclusion of a standard air suspension, marking the first time this technology has been integrated into an Acura model. This, coupled with adaptive dampers, endows the MDX Type S with increased agility compared to the standard MDX, all without compromising comfort.
Despite its large 21-inch wheels, the MDX Type S maintains a comfortable ride quality, effectively handling corners while cruising.
Standard on the Type S is Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system, providing not only front-to-rear power distribution but also side-to-side. This AWD system instills confidence in handling, although the steering, while quick and accurate, might feel a tad light.
The interior of the MDX Type S closely resembles that of the standard version, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen. While the digital gauge cluster is visually appealing, the information layout could be more intuitive. The frustration lies more with the infotainment system’s touchpad operation, which detracts from ease of use compared to a simple touchscreen.
Utilizing a small touchpad on the center console, the system demands acclimatization and can be distracting when attempting basic functions without diverting attention from the road. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated, offering added convenience.
The cabin of the MDX Type S exudes luxury, with its soft leather-clad seats and available massaging front seats, offering comfort during long drives or post-workout relaxation. All three rows provide spacious and comfortable seating. Acura’s interior design demonstrates a remarkable leap in quality, now rivaling German luxury brands.
The 2024 MDX Type S is available with or without the Advance package, incorporating features such as a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, ambient lighting, additional USB ports, and the exceptional 25-speaker ELS Studio audio system. Starting at $69,345, the MDX Type S with the Advance package is priced at $74,695, including destination.
In conclusion, the 2024 Acura MDX Type S stands as an exemplary luxury three-row SUV, skillfully balancing comfort and sportiness. It remains a top contender in its class, offering a near-perfect blend of features.
